DX Marathon
In 2023, I petitioned Mark, WC3W, to create a new QRP category in the DX Marathon Contest. I thought a competition among fixed position antennas would be a good draw for those hams who do not have a tower and beam. My request was late for the 2024 Rules deadline, so I sent my second petition early in 2024 for the 2025 contest season. To give Mark full credit, he pushed very hard to see my petition thru, often taking a third of fourth look at the proposal. Here is the reasoning for the petition: An elite operator with a tower and beam, will always beat an elite operator with fixed wire antennas, regardless of height, over the course of a year-long contest.? There should be a separate category for Fixed Position Wire Antennas. ? To prove my point, I took on my friend, WG5G, mano-a-mano, for the 2023 contest. I told him he was not going to beat me by 40 points, like he beat most everyone else, and he didn’t. I turned in one of the three highest QRP scores ever submitted using fixed-position antennas, 279 points; Dan turned in the highest score ever recorded. He beat be by 35+ points! ? This year, QRP ARCI has agreed to sponsor the plaque for the QRP Limited Category in the 2025 DX Marathon. It is a great contest for filling in those missing DX slots in your collection, and now you do not have restrictions on wire antenna height or length., nor must you compete against towers/beams. ? This year I competed in the DX Challenge Category. There isn’t a QRP division, so my competitors outgunned me by a mile. I’ve listed below my results. Caution: I spent way too much time on this contest!! ? 1. 276 of 320 Band Zones worked = 86% 2. 1115 of 2768 of band Countries worked = 40% 3. 8 Band DXCC 4. WAZ 15M 5. 168 of 200 Band Zones for 5BWAZ 6. Clean Sweep of 24 zones on all 8 bands 7. Clean Sweep of 77 of 346 countries on 8 bands 8. Breakouts: North America= 6.9%, Central America = 15.28%, South America = 13.2%, Europe = 30.5%, Africa = 11.25, Asia = 14.28%, Oceanna = 7.93%. ? This isn’t a winning score, but I was an absolute winner contest. I increased my ATNO CW and ATNO Digi totals and added almost 100 countries to my DXCC Challenge numbers. ? So, if QRP DXing is your thing, then this contest should be your thing as well. ? This is our club supporting us! I hope you will join us in participating in the 2025 DX Marathon. The bands were smokin’ last year and this year looks to be even better. ? 73, Sam Burgin NN4Q #5500 |

EURAO Party - Winter 2025: Season's Greetings
This came to the contest inbox this morning. I guess they wanted all QRP-ARCI Members to be aware:
?
The?European Radio Amateurs' Organization?announces a new party on the air, this time with the motto: "Season's Greetings". Remember this is not a contest, it is just a radio meeting with a few simple 'rules', better to call them recommendations. Purpose: Wish a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all the stations you contact with these days. This is a good time to wish peace and love to everyone. Have fun and meet other hams all over the world or just locals. Of course SWLs are welcome to participate. Date & time: from December 24th, 2024, to January 6th, 2025, 00:00-24:00 UTC. Bands & modes: all modes and frequencies, mainly in HF bands, but not only.?. Call: "CQ EURAO Party". Exchange: because this is a QSO event, not a contest, you can talk about whatever you want, in any language, and for as long as you like. Here are some topic suggestions to get the conversation going: name, city, locator, weather, antennas, rigs, etc. Also talk about QSL interchange. Tell the truth. Say "no, thanks" if you are not interested in QSL cards. But if you would like to have a memory of your contact, feel free to use our?EuroBureauQSL?(see below). Logs: for statistic purposes only, we ask participants to submit their logs to?party@...?in ADIF format, where the filename should be your callsign (e.g. EA3RKF.ADI). There will be no results or league tables, only statistical information about number of QSOs, countries, callsigns, OMs/YLs/Clubs, etc. Certificate of Participation: for all those sending the log and without a minimum of confirmed QSOs. EuroBureauQSL: you can use it to interchange QSLs even if you are not member. In this case, just send the QSL to the??of the country of the station you have contacted. ? 72 de Larry W2LJ QRP-ARCI Contest Manager |
Re: Mert Nellis, W0UFO, SK
I am so sad to hear the news about Mert, W0UFO.??I remember working him many times over the years in the Zombie Shuffle. The last time that I went to Dayton, probably about 10 years ago, I happened to be waiting in line with a friend for a breakfast table at the FDIM hotel. There were two hams in from of us and only one table for four so the waitress asked if we would share which we did. I was very surprised and pleased to find that I was sharing a table with Mert, W0UFO. It was really great to meet him in person.?
?
My last contact with Mert was probably about 2 years ago. I was operating portable with my IC-705 and JPC-12 vertical from a beautiful spot along the Rideau River and had a very nice ragchew QSO with him. He remembered meeting me at breakfast at FDIM that time.??

For those of you who are interested, Mert W0UFO, gave a presentation on his ham journey and QRP last April 2024 at the Minnesota Amateur Radio Technical Society (formerly MNQRP). Many of us knew part?of his story, but we were blessed that he would do this for?us and wanted to share it with all his QRP friends and family.? Hi friends, It's with a very heavy heart that I must announced that Mert Nellis, W0UFO, passed away peacefully on December 19th, 2024.? Mert was 99 years old and less than three months away from his 100th birthday (March 2).? His mind was still ss sharp as ever, showing no signs of his age. Mert fell and broke his right hip about 5 years ago and that surgery was successful, allowing him walk and even drive his car again. Unfortunately, he fell again about a month ago and broke his other hip.? This hip replacement surgery did not go as well as the first and he went into hospice care about 2 weeks after. Mert has been an active QRPer since first licensed in June, 1941 (83 years ago).?? He's the only ham that I ever knew who was told to shut down his station on December 11, 1941 (Pearl Harbor Day) as World War II commenced. Mert served in the Navy for 23 years (active and reserve) and, because of his head-start in electronic knowledge as a ham, the Navy sent him to Iowa State University for formal electronics training.? After being an instructor in the Navy he was a college professor (Electrical Engineering) at Michigan State University for a few years before moving on to start and run several business involving electronics, one being designing and constructing custom transformers. Mert published countless articles in QST and QRP Quarterly and was an avid homebrewer.? For the last several years Mert lived in a condo so he no longer had his big antennas, but he still kept active in many QRP contests as well as some DX contests. He attended FDIM and OzarkCon for more than 25 years, loving to socialize and compare notes with his many friends.? He usually had a project or two to demonstrate at FDIM, including his entry in the 2-transistor power amplifier contest and other gizmos that he developed. We often sat in a restaurant where Mert pulled out a napkin and started drawing schematics and formulas showing how things "used to be built".? Mert has been a mentor for me for ALL of my projects through the years as well as for countless other people.? He’s always been my first Beta tester, providing valuable feedback and suggestions about how to make the projects better.? Mert was at peace with the world as well as with God when he passed away. My friend (Chuck Stroud, KA8HDE) and I prayed with him when he was in hospice care at the convalescence home so he was at peace. So long, dear friend.? As Mert told us a few days ago, "See you in heaven.? I'll be waiting for you". 73, -Craig, AA0ZZ |
