Parking Spaces

Hey gang...this email is just me venting ...

Was on 40M CW section the other day, listening and not hearing very much...mostly nothing.

No problem finding a place to call CQ.

Do you remember back before the 80's, if you wanted to call CQ on 40, it was almost impossible to find a vacant parking spot.

Now, pick any spot you want.

I keep thinking it's time to sell my Buggy Whip company stock.

DIZ,

And when you do call CQ no one comes back! They are all on digital modes now. Try listening to the old Novice band from 7.100 to 7.125. At night you used to hear a few tubers in QSO now the digital guys are moving up from 7.070 above 7.100.

Yes the buggy whips business is pretty slow.

Did you call CQ? Bill, at least the digital guys are on the air using the spectrum.

I do mostly building/fixing these days.? Its really disappointing to be working on a receiver
and not being able to even find a single signal on any band.

Now Doug that is down right funny.? I got a question.? How do you
know if a human being is doing the work?? I think there is the
possibility that there is a 'bot' at the wheel doing an exchange,
logging it and registering the contact with another bot for an
award.? :-)

I was being a curmudgeion about my videos and you made me realize
that there may be bots written to go to all the YouTube videos and
post a dislike.?? OIU)@#(*$)(*_$)*%)@(Y#(Y? :-)

We are at the transition from Solar Cycle 24 to Solar Cycle 25.

Will anyone be around in two years when propagation should be better?

Will CW survive this time? Or will digital take over?

I think much of what we are seeing is people who fire up the rig, tune around and, hearing nothing, say the band is dead, do a post-mortem power down and go watch the Golf channel. However, do the same thing on a contest weekend, and there's a bazillion signals on the air. I think that, for someone to pronounce the band "dead", they should only make that pronouncement after they've called CQ at least 3 times. Otherwise, the band might be taking a catnap, but it's not dead.

Hello Jack,

This is QRP. Even with 99 watts (also QRP) it often takes more than three times. A member of my club (now SK) set his computer keyer to call CQ over and over and over with appropriate pauses while he worked on other things. If/when he got a reply he jumped in for the QSO. I am thinking of putting my antique Raspberry PI (original model) to work doing just that. Just a suggestion.

This was brought up yesterday at the club's annual picnic. I don't think you were there but the exact same thing was said :)

Remember when we used to have to fight for our bands? Probably couldn't give it away now. Between satellites and the internet, even 40m broadcasters seem to have largely given up HF.

Up until beginning of summer skcc had quite a run using spectrum typically 50 khz up from bottom edge. Of course, we are the cw amish who don't use electronic keys, or choose to pound brass for sake of community. Many qrp ops you recognize are skcc active. I think it is summer and low solar flux, as often 40m only has spotlight paths.

On ft8, it seems to be many big guns who aren't finding cw activity. Some of these dudes will run 3 bands at once. At least they aren't hogging much spectrum.

CW ain't played out. We have more than 8000 QCX rigs. Just a little propagation will bring some ops. Skcc is doing decent in incubating some new ops.

I use DX Lab with DX Atlas to monitor the CW (and RTTY) bands through the
RBN.

DX Lab can produce a map on DX Atlas that shows the current activity.
See the attachment.
