Re: 5Watters Q8

Me too, on everything. I'm building a 5W and am using Chuck's manual as I build. I doubt that many of us really appreciate the work he puts in while creating one of these manuals. Think about it: Place one component, take a picture, crop the picture, write the narrative, and insert it into the manual...repeat for 200 pages!. Having done some writing myself, I know the effort it takes to do something like this...and he charges us nothing! Same for the videos. All of us are standing on his shoulders and we owe him a lot.
Thanks, Chuck, your efforts are sincerely appreciated...

Diz,

I am going to ramble here so I proffer my apologies in advance.

Do not get yourself down about these trivial oversights. Ya done good with the 1Watters and 5Watters. For about $55 you got us close to two decent radios and kept us junkies going with the part of the hobby -- building -- we love so dearly. ("I burn up More rolls of solder that log books" -- isn't that how it goes?) Besides, Dave Benson brought us the magical SW-##+ series for about that price and it did not have a keyer chip on board. Also,we are two decades down the road from then so surely adjusted for inflation, these two kits are bargains. That I have to dive into my stash for a lousy NPN or an SMD LM386 is an adventure not a pain in the ass.

As for the replacement of the Q8 with a 2N3904, I recall we did that with something similar back with the NorCal 40A build. Also, I remember Chuck telling us that that project was all about teaching us liberal arts and business administration and software developer types how to gather a junk box and scrounge therefrom.

I could go on but, while I am at it, Chuck is unnecessarily beating himself up about no one watching the magnificent videos he produces. Well, I am sure that there's not the audience on YouTube for that content versus the swill and drek that gets pumped out there for the mindless mouth-breathing proles, but measured in appreciation, these are treasures! It is a privilege to have Chuck memorialize his thoughts, advice, recommendations, and methods and make them available to us for free. I have built several radios using these videos and value what I have learned. It's kind of like getting an EE without all the bravo sierra.

And don't get me started on the incredible manuals and references he has produced (and the data you have made available on your website).

We are lucky to have you both as resources; maybe our appreciation and gratitude will mitigate the frustration somewhat.

Sorry for the rant.
