No pelts tonight

Larry Makoski W2LJ

40 Meters was the great barren wasteland in NJ tonight. I heard nothing of Tom, and Jerry came out of the aetherial muck for about 30 seconds to sink back into the quicksand of an ionosphere wracked by solar disturbances.

In my 26 years of being a Ham, I don't think I've ever witnessed a sunspot minimum like we are having (or in the near process of having). I thought solar flares and CMEs were supposed to happen on the upswing!

Only one pelt tonight

Wow, propagation into VE6 on 40m sure has been horrible every Thursday for the last few months.? I only have the first 35 minutes to look before I have to go and coach hockey for my middle two boys hockey team.? I tuned and tuned like just about every other Thursday for the last two months and finally heard AC7A with a S5 signal.? Got him after only a few calls then shortly after that the band faded.
?
Then at about the time I need to pull the switch and race to go lace up the skates, the band changes and I hear N9AW working a big pileup.? But he is just at the noise level, QSB up and down.? I tried a few times but had to finally leave just as the band was building a bit.? Why did I volunteer for this hockey?? Oh well, the XYL says I'll be thankful I did when they get older.? Yeah, I know she is right and deep down I enjoy the hockey coaching.? If I can only convince the other 30 parents to switch their schedules to a non-Fox night?? :-)

FOX: Ups aned Downs (again)

George, W5YR

Foxii signals ranged from S9+10 dB to a low of beneath the noise level - QSB
was rapid at times, although 10 or 20 seconds might go by with a Fox at a
good workable level before sagging back into the noise.

I think that most of the Tornados and other North Texas locals got their
Two-Fers tonight, but we had to work for them!

I guess the frustrating part is that 30 minutes before the Hunts started,
most signals were S7 or better, noise was low and the band really sounded
good. Then the magic 0200Z arrived and down we went the slippery slope.
Probably not feasible, but maybe during these sunspot minima, etc., moving
the Hunts back to 0100Z might be an improvement.

But, it wouldn't be much fun if it was always easy!

Re: This evening's hunt

I should have never made such an optimistic statement - I put a jinx on myself! Never heard a peep out of either fox, and the load of hounds simply vanished around 0230.

Went to the Lakehead Amateur Radio Club meeting tonight and got home at 10PM.

Cant hear anything of a fox on the band. Big pile up around 7031 but cant hear who they are working, so reduced to copying W1AW at 589.

Lets make them a fox!

Good Luck all

It is now 0306 z and not much on the bands. Solid S6 noise level, KE4UEH
calling CQ on 7.039 with a great 579 signal, pileup on 7.030, and then
only 4 more signals down to the bottom end of the band, and CO8LY
working stations on 7.006......

Have a great night folks

Fred,

I seemed to have gotten Wayne shortly after you. I can hear the Hounds
calling Al, but since he's the nest state over from me; I doubt I will
bag him tonight. It as good to get one though. When I worked Wayne he
was 339 - a few minutes ago he was up to 559.

Good luck to all!
