Re: Zip
glyons1948
I listened around the band early in the evening and again about a
hour before the hunt. Lots of good signals from around the country. However, once the hunt started not only did I not hear N1IX I never heard the pack calling him. I heard Bill at ESP levels all night but never loud enough to hear his entire exchange to a hound. I too heard him send DN on several occasions but heard him working simplex a lot. I contributed to the on freq mayhem - the four or five times he was loud enough I felt I had a chance - because he was clearly working simplex. Last night was a total wash from the portable location in SC. Oh well, better luck next week. Re: Zip
I actually heard Bill, early on ..... it was difficult. He was 449, tops; and I heard someone calling DN (didn't realize that was Bill). So I tried working split - by sending about a kc down; but it sounded like the guys who were calling on frequency were the ones being answered.
Anyway, after about 20 minutes into the hunt, Bill faded out completely; so I went down to 80 Meters and had a ragchew there. Later, coming back up to 40, I heard a hound or two work Dave; but I never heard a real good pack which seemed strange. It was especially disappointing for me; as I have been having problems with a S3 to S5 background noise on 40 Meters lately. Whatever neighbor is using whatever appliance must have had it turned off last night. Last night with no signals, the background noise didn't even register any of the K2's LED bars! I was psyched, only to walk away empty handed. Oh well, there's always next week! With any luck, I should be able to work Doc. But I think I won't even be hearing you, John. I think we're too close for 40 Meters. 73 de Larry W2LJ -- Makos327@... |

yep - you were 589-599 most of the time, and we politely went back and forth, alternately sending our calls, for an hour. Jerry, N9AW, was in there a lot, too, with his S9+60 KW sig, also Dennis, N4DD, with an enormous sig...of course, when those guys come up as Foxii, they'll be back to running QRP, and we won't hear but a whisper <sigh> LL |

almost 300-400 milliseconds at a time. I barked my call for about an hour and my head caved in...so I went to bed. Seems to be OK now. LL I heard you....I think we were teeter tottering...you'd send, I'd send, you'd send...well you know how it goes. Your sigs were 599 then 229 and all over again it went. another onefer for me. Dave wasn't hard to find and I did work him but Bill was at esp level all the time he was on and I could not get his call, most of the hunts go the other way for me, I catch the one that is long and miss the one that is close in to me. Oh well that is better than getting skunked .... see you all next week.. Bill N8WS |

Yep, Al, there were some rude ops in that bunch last nite. Bill kept saying DN and many kept calling him on frequency. It was a struggle to hear who he was replying to. I finally worked him down about 1 kHz. He really was working split...[g]

All,
Dave was really booming into AL early in the hunt. I believe I caught him in the first couple of minutes. Bill, on the other hand, was nowhere to be found until about half way through the hunt. I stumbled across a loud buzz of signals and was able to pick out pieces of his call. It took a few minutes to realize that he was listening down. As the evening wore on, his signal improved and I finally made his log around 0300. All in all, a fairly pleasing evening of fun on the radio. -- Jay AJ4AY Mobile, AL |

The band was not good tonight and I had some trouble with Bill W7KXB. He didn't direct Hounds up and took everyone on frequency. He just quit sending several times and I went looking for Dave. I found Dave but he was as weak as day old tea! Went back to Bill and he was back working folks. I slid in about 100 Hz below his frequency and he heard me and we worked.
I went back and Dave had moved up 100 Hz but was almost Q5. I found I could copy him and he was looking up a little. I found the Hounds and slid in under there frequency a little. I called twice and he came back but QSB was at a minimum and I had to guess when he turned it to me. I gave him my numbers and he came back with a QSL and I was done. 73 Karl K5DI |
