K9DRP preliminary log 80

What a horrid night! Things didn't start out too bad at first,
although my noise level was a constant S9. Then at 8:33 the "Martian
Radar" fired up, wiping out segments several kC wide on the band. In
switching between antennas the peak noise levels were a few kC apart.
I had to hunt for sections in the band where I could hear anything. I
think folks were having trouble hearing me too, as I had to ask for
several stations multiple times to respond with their exchange.

So Todd, N9NE, how many contacts did you have to make before I finally
got your name logged correctly?! Damn auto-fill bites sometimes.

Anyhow, after deleting 1/3 of my contacts due to N9NE dupes, I ended up
with:

DX Code of Conduct

?

I will listen, and listen, and then listen again before calling.

I will only call if I can copy the DX station properly.

I will not trust the DX cluster and will be sure of the DX station's call sign before calling.

I will not interfere with the DX station nor anyone calling and will never tune up on the DX frequency or in the QSX slot.

I will wait for the DX station to end a contact before I call.

I will always send my full call sign.

I will call and then listen for a reasonable interval. I will not call continuously.

I will not transmit when the DX operator calls another call sign, not mine.

I will not transmit when the DX operator queries a call sign not like mine.

I will not transmit when the DX station requests geographic areas other than mine.

When the DX operator calls me, I will not repeat my call sign unless I think he has copied it incorrectly.

I will be thankful if and when I do make a contact.

I will respect my fellow hams and conduct myself so as to earn their respect.

Re: KR0U Log Report for 26 Feb 2025

This is exactly why the FRITZ map is so helpful. Especially when condx are poor and "I think it was right" but just 99.44% sure. Seeing the dot on the map keeps me from taking up time with an insurance QSO.

Thank you sir - always a fine signal int W-TX.

I received no further corrections, so I kept the second contacts from N9NE and NK6A and deleted their earlier contacts that they reported as having errors. Yes, it pays to check the Fritz Map and try an insurance call if I don't get it right the first time!

Thank you for all the pelts during my four runs this winter season. From the rest of the season, I'll be running with you in the hound pack. It has been my pleasure to serve as your quarry!

K9DRP Fox announcement for Thursday, Feb 27

I’ll be one of your two foxii on 80 meters Thursday night, along with
Earl, N8SS, in Michigan. I'll be operating from "The Banks of the
Wabash" near Marshall, Illinois between 0100 and 0230Z and within +/-
10Khz of 3.560 MHz. I’ll be running my Argo V throttled down to 5
watts into an EFHW up 50 ft. with an East-West broadside, and to an OCF
up 40 ft. with a North-South broadside.

I will be posting QSOs to the Fritz map () so
you can check the status of your pelt.

I will be listening up as far as hounds are willing to try, so take advantage
of that range. I doubt that I will run simplex, unless things get awful slow.
Exchange is the usual RST SPC Name PWR (RST IL Don 5W). I will repeat your
call at the end of my exchange.

I hope to give out pelts from coast to coast, and north to the Canucks!

Good luck and happy hunting!

72,

Don, K9DRP

K9DRP and I will be your 80M foxii this week.

As usual, I will start out split and go to simplex when activity warrants it.? Listen for the UP in my CQ to determine if I am split.? I am located? in a rural locale?in SW Michigan that is usually pretty quiet.? Good luck to all,?see you in the log.

Thank you Steve! My advantage is being close to the center of the country, so I can work coast to coast via single hop paths. You have to work a lot harder to get the west coast stations. It was a good night for both of us.

Good morning Tim.

Once I find the FOX, I narrow down the waterfall so I can see the pack calling up to about 2.5-kHz above the FOX.? The way I call – mostly – is I put my TX signal slightly below or slightly above the howling pack.?? Sometimes below 0.9-kHz, sometimes above 2.0-kHz.? In the rare occasion I see a big gap in the middle of the pack I’ll drop my signal in that gap.? It depends on how wide the pack is, but it just seems counter-intuitive to put your signal in the middle of the pack unless the FOX is S-9+30dB indicating you have a pipeline path. That never happens.? I rarely make more than 3 calls without moving the TX frequency.

Thank you for being there sir….. the contact looks perfect to me.

A fine night on 40M! The hardest part was trying to pick calls out of a solid wall of good QRP signals tonight. There was no precipitation static, and the winds didn't seem to be causing any issues. ??I count 72 valid QSOs, two foxes, for a of total 74.

?

Thank you all for being part of the hunts! This was my last fox run for the season, but I hope to hear you all in the packs and for the season-end Foxtravaganza.

KR0U Log Report for 26 Feb 2025

A fine night on 40M! The hardest part was trying to pick calls out of a solid wall of good QRP signals tonight. There was no precipitation static, and the winds didn't seem to be causing any issues.

I fat-fingered N9NE Todd's call on the the first QSO, but he wisely called for an insurance pelt shortly after his Fritz-Dot didn't appear. Don NK6A forgot to check his power, and asked me to cancel the 100W first QSO at 0203, and count only the legal 5W contact at 0301. Both those hounds bagged good pelts with their second QSO, and deservedly so.

So adjusting for those two invalid contacts I count 72 valid QSOs, two foxes, for a of total 74.

Thank you all for being part of the hunts! This was my last fox run for the season, but I hope to hear you all in the packs and for the season-end Foxtravaganza.

72,
--Tim (KR0U)

Looks perfect on my end sir.? It tool me nearly 30-minutes to get you.? I tried high.? I tried low.? You were 559 at best and I heard you giving out 599 and 579, so I knew it wasn’t my turn yet.? But finally we connected.

Thank you for the contact.

'Twas a good night! Ran mostly on 7031.42 (happy Pi Day in advance) but shifted to 7031.69 due to QRM about an hour and a quarter into the hunt. 63 pelts minus a dupe or two.?

?

Please email corrections to me by 8:00 PM EST (0100Z) Wednesday and I'll put out a final log.

And I'll be the other fox. I run 5W from the KX3 to a 43 ft vertical, backed up by a low dipole. I second what Steve says about operating practices, with two additions:

- Every time you send your call, listen before sending it again. I may be trying to reply to you, but you won't know that if you don't make use of your hound dog ears!

- If I ask for a partial call sign, stand by unless your call is a likely match for the partial.

Good luck to all hounds, and may old Sol be kind to us!

72,
Tim (KR0U)

Hi, all,
?
I’ll be one of your two foxii on Tuesday night, along with Tim, KR0U, in Colorado. Look for me to be handing out pelts from Kingston, NJ, grid FN20qj, between 0200 and 0330Z and between 7030 and 7050 kHz. I’ll be running a K3 tuned down to 5W into a 43-foot base-loaded vert. I will be posting dots to the Fritz map (http://www.k4oaq.com/fox) so you can check your QSO.
?
Some requests:
* Please enable QSK and your split-mode receiver (subreceiver) if you have those capabilities. That enables you to hear me and any other hounds near you who might QRM you.
* If you hear me call another hound, please QRX until the QSO is finished.
* If I’m split, please don’t bunch up, because I’ll be listening outside the bunches.
* If I’m simplex, please don’t zero-beat me.
* You can check the Fritz map to see whether I've logged you. Don't be shy about asking for a repeat QSO if you thought I got you and I didn't.
If you do these things, there's a better chance that I'll be able to hand you a pelt before the propagation goes out or the hunt ends.
?
Good luck and happy hunting!
?
