WX2S 40m fox announcement for Feb. 25
Hi, all,
?
I¡¯ll be one of your two foxii on Tuesday night, along with Tim, KR0U, in Colorado. Look for me to be handing out pelts from Kingston, NJ, grid FN20qj, between 0200 and 0330Z and between 7030 and 7050 kHz. I¡¯ll be running a K3 tuned down to 5W into a 43-foot base-loaded vert. I will be posting dots to the Fritz map (http://www.k4oaq.com/fox) so you can check your QSO.
?
Some requests:
* Please enable QSK and your split-mode receiver (subreceiver) if you have those capabilities. That enables you to hear me and any other hounds near you who might QRM you.
* If you hear me call another hound, please QRX until the QSO is finished. * If I¡¯m split, please don¡¯t bunch up, because I¡¯ll be listening outside the bunches. * If I¡¯m simplex, please don¡¯t zero-beat me. * You can check the Fritz map to see whether I've logged you. Don't be shy about asking for a repeat QSO if you thought I got you and I didn't. If you do these things, there's a better chance that I'll be able to hand you a pelt before the propagation goes out or the hunt ends.
?
Good luck and happy hunting!
?
73/72, -Steve WX2S.

Re: W9CF 80m fox report Feb 21 UTC (Feb 20 local)
I live at the end of a small cul-de-sac. We don't really have gutters here in the Sonoran desert, just storm drains to keep the streets from filling too much when it does rain. We did get 0.01 inches of rain on January 28 at the airport, ending the stretch of 159 days without rain :-).

Re: W9CF 80m fox report Feb 21 UTC (Feb 20 local)
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýFritz and the group, ? Current location just off the Chesapeake Bay in eastern Virginia. I have a 160 meter full loop, about 535 feet of wire. It is up about 55 feet due to the tall pine trees. There are 5 turn points which make it sort of a round loop. I have a flat swr on most bands especially 80 meters. Now, there are lobes on transmit and they do change over time. It seems like the loop rotates counter clockwise and I have to drop a halyard and pull it back clockwise. ? Today I completed a new rig, QMX and with 5 watts worked AZ, northers CA, OR and WA with 579 reports on 20 meters. Not the same as 80 meters but you get the idea. ? I worked Randy with no effort, he just had to find me. I then scanned the band and heard a hound pack so I knew Kevin was nearby. I watched the blue dots move east and then I could hear him. His signal was up and down but stayed at a 229 with some peaks. I was right on the fourth loop line about 2000 miles. Look at Jack, N2RK in NY. He was the same distance as I was. ? I can hear just about everything but if my loop lobe isn¡¯t directed at the station then I get nothing. I sent my call sign every time I heard Kevin pause. ? I¡¯m not an expert on antennas but just repeating what I have experienced. The local club gurus put the antenna up for me and I just operate. Here is an interesting note. This loop antenna has two feed points. They are at opposite sides of the loop. Both feed lines are ladder line to a balun and then coax into the shack. Theory has it that if one coax is not terminated the RF does not travel down the ladder line but sees it as a stub. I can operate from the garage or the shack with excellent results. One thing I never documented was the radiating pattern from either end of the loop. ? Hope this helps with the antenna discussion. Not a beverage but a loop out here. ? Dean/ N2TNN ? I wish I had been at my Dublin, VA QTH so I cud have chimed in with observations from there. Dean, I am interested in whether you are using a beverage & if so, it's direction. Kevin, the same question goes out for you, as well as anybody else who wants to chime in.? I've been using beverages for some years now. I started with 1000 ft or so, off thru the fields where cows reside because I thought it had to be long. I've since settled on 280 ft becuz that's the longest that fits in the fenced off yard that keeps cows out. That length also has the added feature of the bandwidth being wide enough to need only 4 of them to cover all directions. Actually only two 2-wire beverages are needed to cover 4 directions. I'm thinking maybe shorter beverages might be better than no beverage. "Beverage on the ground" (BOG) is something easy to put up. And these little binocular cores make it easy to construct matching xformers. I used YCCC article that can be found on the web for my two-wire beverages. I just looked & some things are mis-labeled. I got confused trying to figure out exactly what was wrong. I did not do a Faraday shield. And I used the Amertron RCS4 coax switch. ? |
Re: W9CF 80m fox report Feb 21 UTC (Feb 20 local)
Fritz,
I do not have room for even the shortest beverage on my 1/4 acre city lot. I did have one loop of a K9AY receive antenna for a while, until the small tree it was supported by died. I was receiving on my vertical which, obviously, has no directivity. I have been thinking about phasing some small loops, but work gets in the way of my free time to build them. I agree, I have used receiving antennas when operating the low bands at multiops, and it makes a big difference. I don't have a second phase-locked receiver here either, but I have used an Elecraft K3S in diversity mode, again at multiops, and with two spaced receiving antennas it's even better. I'm certain that in a quieter location outside of the Phoenix metropolitan area, without all of the noise generators around, I could hear much better. With decent receive antennas and diversity I could hear even better. Neither of those changes is likely to happen. 73 Kevin w9cf On Fri, Feb 21, 2025 at 3:33?PM FritzOAQ via groups.io <Fritz@...> wrote:

Re: Preliminary Log 80m hunt 250221 NC4RT
My apologies Dwain.? ?I will learn and hope from now on won't make this mistake.
?
As I recall, we went back and forth quite a few times on your name, and I mistakenly thought I had it.
?
Each fox has his/her own methods for hearing...? some use N1MM to keep a running Fox log, and so when they type in your callsign, your name and QTH automatically populate the relevant fields.? ?I keep a separate log for each hunt, so I don't see that info.? I also insist on hearing each piece of the exchange, even if it's someone I've worked many times before and know the elements by heart.
?
We have a Glen and a Glenn.? ?We have Deans and Dans and Dens and Dons.? We have a Peter and a Pete. We have a Mac who used to be Vaden, and a Mac who used to be Reggie. We have Randys and Andys (I came --> <-- this close to calling Andy Randy last night).? So I know to listen and to get it right.. My most fervent apologies for messing yours up.

"Dwain".? I always tell people to think "Mark Twain" - take off the "T" and put on a "D".?? Keep up the good work and hope to work you many times in the future. Dwain - K?LOA

Re: KW4NJA Final Log 40M Fox Hunt 2.18.25
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýThanks for those kind words Nick. I must say, it¡¯s been quite the learning curve to get my sea legs with being a Fox. There have been several who have helped me navigate this new role for me. Without their help I would be as lost as last years Easter eggs. I hope to get you on 80M in April my friend . 73Scott KW4NJA On Feb 20, 2025, at 14:38, Nick Franco via groups.io <kf2p@...> wrote:

Re: KW4NJA Final Log 40M Fox Hunt 2.18.25
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýScott,I was on the entire hunt. You were a solid 559-579 here in Kissimmee, FL. I was running my KX3 to a mag mount 40M HamStick from the parking lot if our resort. You never heard me. Even when you went simplex, I think I was the first to jump on that but NG. It happens. I must have been going right over you. ? I wanted to commend you on you operating skill on this hunt. You pattern was consistent and and made hearing you and knowing when to try a no-brained. Thanks for an excellent hunt even if I didn¡¯t make it into the log. ?I will look for you on 80m in April. I should be back on Long Island then.? 72, Nick -KF2P/4 On Feb 20, 2025, at 08:11, Scott Wooten - KW4NJA via groups.io <Wooten1027@...> wrote:
