Re: 40 meter fox 2/5 N0UR.......

Dan: Thanks for the reminder. Jim wanted the upper section, so you should take the bottom half. The schedule on the website has not changed and that was the source of my confusion. 72, John, K4BAI.

ARS Monthly Spartan Sprint Tonight!

Monday evening QRP Fun!

Overview & Rule Summary

FOR THE ADVENTURE RADIO SOCIETY

SPARTAN SPRINT

?

What is an ARS Spartan Sprint and how can I participate?

The Adventure Radio Society Spartan Sprint is a two hour casual QRP contest.?

It is held on the first Monday of every month to encourage QRP operators to get on and go to somewhere

near the standard QRP frequencies on the 80-40-20-15-10 Meter bands for an evening of fun.?

It is open to all QRP CW operators – there is not any membership requirement.??

Operating portable and/or using lightweight minimalist (spartan) equipment is encouraged, but is not required.

THE CONTEST PERIOD FOR EACH TIME ZONE IS:

EASTERN 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Local.

CENTRAL 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Local

MOUNTAIN 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Local

PACIFIC 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Local

Does?not?shift for DST – This event is always at these Local Times

(UTC for STANDARD TIME : 0100Z to 0300Z)

(UTC for DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME : 0000Z to 0200Z)

?

POWER OUTPUT

To keep with its minimalist theme, Maximum Spartan Sprint power output is 5 watts.

?

However, a Spartan Sprint participant running 5 watts who is submitting

?results is allowed to work a non-QRP station.??That contact will count.

?

(A Non-QRP station is not permitted to submit results for this QRP event.)

?

?

OPERATION

We operate CW on 80, 40, 20, 15 and 10 meters, around standard QRP frequencies.

Call???CQ SP?????? Or listen for calling stations.

?

?

EXCHANGE

- Your Call Sign
- Your State or Province
- Your Power output

?

SCORING

Scoring is somewhat unique - score is calculated based on?[Number of Contacts] / [Station Weight].

Working the same station on a different band counts as another contact.

The weight of your station consists of everything except your antenna and feed line.

If your station includes your home-based rig, antenna tuner, DC power supply, heavy paddle or bug - obviously

you are not lightweight - simply report your weight as 30 lbs. (That is the default weight for the Tubby division.)

?

?

REPORTING
To report your results, go to?

, and select the?‘ARS Spartan Sprint’?(on the Left side).

You will enter your?[Station Weight]?and the?[Number of Contacts]?that you made.

Soapbox comments may include your power, equipment, antennas, band conditions, outdoor experiences,

and anything else you wish to comment on.

Scores will be Automatically Calculated

Reports will be available for both the Skinny (lightweight) and Tubby (heavyweight) entrants.

?

Looking forward to working you during the next Spartan Sprint.

Re: KR0U Fox Log 2025-Jan-31

Good morning Tim.?

For the Fox Hunts I always set my radio with Receiver-A centered in the low FOX window (3555-kHz or 7035-kHz ± 5-kHz) and Receiver-B centered in the high FOX window (3565-kHz or 7045-kHz) with each waterfall set ± 5-kHz from center.? Sometimes I spot the FOX the moment the spike pops up.? Sometimes I see the broad swath of baying hounds.? Last night I spotted the low hounds first.? I looked ~ 1-kHz low and there was KT0AA, weak but readable.? I tried calling but he was giving out 599s and I heard him about 439, so little chance right away.?

After a few unsuccessful minutes on KT0AA I had a look at the upper window waterfall.? It was easy to spot you.? I made about 3 calls and got through with a clean 559 both ways at 0207.? Thank you.? You are about 535 miles from me, a good distance for early evening 80m. Tony is just over 1000 miles from me, a bit of a stretch on 80m so soon after sunset.

One of the nice things about the radio I use is that both receivers are locked to the same time-base, so if you tune them exactly on the same station there is no phase distortion.? The CW signals are exactly matched.? So I took the B-receiver that I got you on over to Tony’s frequency and with one RX on the dipole and the other RX on the vertical I was able to eliminate most of the fading and QSB on Tony’s signal.? Then the only issue was getting Tony to pick my signal out of the QSB.? That took exactly 30-minutes.

Thank you for the contacts.? Hope you have a GREAT weekend.

?

It was a pretty good night for 80M I was able to hold 3563.6KHz without much trouble (it pays to avoid 35xx.0 KHz frequencies, where the nets are most likely to be).

?

I went simplex when the pack thinned out at around 0250. I managed to pull out a few more weak ones, but there were some that popped only long enough to catch a letter or two. I'm pretty sure it was either AK1P or N1IX calling at 0305, but I never copied a complete call sign or exchange, so that one did get away. John K4BAI claimed an insurance pelt with five minutes to go, but he did make it the first time around.

?

So I count 48 unique hounds claiming their pelt, plus the two foxes for a grand total of 50.

?

Thank you all for coming out and making it enjoyable!

Good evening,

?

As Tim mentioned, I will also be hiding in the 80m woods, transmitting somewhere between 3.550-3.570 MHz and listening up 1-2 KHz. If the QSO rate slows down enough or band conditions go sour, I will switch to simplex operation.

?

I will be running a TS-590SG at 5w output into a 80m horizontal loop up 30ft, but switching to a Gap Challenger DX vertical from time to time.

QTH is St. Peters, MO, EM48qs.

Good luck in the hunt!

This week will be my second run on 80M, along with Tony KT0AA. Please look for us between 3550 and 3570 KHz starting at 0200 UTC. I'm in northern Colorado, DN70kg, and Tony is in Missouri, so every hounds from coast to coast should have a good chance of bagging at least one pelt!

?

I'll be running my KX3 with the 43 foot vertical as the main antenna and a low dipole to fill in the short skip paths. I'll start out listening up, and will go simplex when conditions and the pack permit.

Please remember to listen between your calls, and if I ask for a partial call please stand by unless the partial is a close match to yours!

Good luck to all the hounds, and may the propagation be with us!

KT0AA Fox Hunt 80M Preliminary Log

Good evening hounds,

It was a fun night to be a fox! There were tons of 599 signals here for about the first 35-40 minutes, then it got pretty rough.

I was transmitting on 3.5537 MHz during the entire hunt and switched to simplex operation around 02:52 (although there were still stations calling me 1+ KHz up). At 03:11, another station decided to call CQ just above my CQ freq but thankfully didn't stay long.

At 03:23 I believe I heard a call with "F2" calling me, but never copied the entire call due to band conditions.

K7GO was the toughest (logged) station to copy tonight, but I appreciate Lewis' persistence and patience in earning a pelt.

Here is my preliminary log. I already removed KK0LOA at 02:09, as I copied K0LOA correctly the second time at 02:31 (Thanks, Dwain!):

Charts 40m foxhunt 250129

I'm trying something new this time....? ?RBN charts of the signals heard from the 2 foxii.
?
I cannot promise to do this each time...? ?I don't want to go to RBN until I've personally collected my 2 pelts.? ?On Tuesday, I was fortunate to finally grab Don with 30 minutes left, and so looked up these 2 maps towards the end of the session.
?
Good luck tonight Tim and Tony!? ?(A nice coincidence:? both of them lie at the same bearing from my QTH, 290 degrees.)
