SIGNUP is OPEN for the FEB/MAR Bi-Monthly LARGE size print exchanges 5
Hi folks, Mike King asked if I could post the signup for the LARGE Feb/March print exchange now rather than waiting until February 1st. Since this is a special exchange, I don't see any reason why I can't/shouldn't do it now. There will still be REGULAR size Feb/March exchanges and I will post the signup for those exchanges on February 1st. I have not assumed that everyone who participates in the regular exchanges wants to join the large exchange, but I have made a few assumptions based on past experience in putting together this initial list. That said, I really want to encourage others to join this exchange. Making and seeing the larger prints has been one of the highlights of the entire print exchange experience for me. If anyone else would like to participate in the February/March B&W and/or Color LARGE print exchanges, please respond by email or post to the group. While most prints will be in the 13x19 inch/A3 size, we are flexible on the size for the large print exchange. Your prints must be larger than Letter/A4 and no larger that 13x19/A3. In addition to 13x19, I have made prints on 12x12, 11x14 and 11x17 inch papers in the past for certain images. I am posting the signup earlier than usual. Signup will close on February 4th. I will post the final lists on the 5th. Please ship your prints so they arrive in Alaska no later than the end of March. My goal is to have the prints back in your hands in early April. The following photographers are currently signed up for the LARGE Black & White exchange: Tom O'Connell Gary Benson Jayanand Govindaraj Nara Narasimhan Mike King Jeff Deam Your name could be here Your name could be here Your name could be here Your name could be here Your name could be here Your name could be here The following photographers are currently signed up for the Color print exchange: Tom O'Connell Gary Benson Jayanand Govindaraj Nara Narasimhan Mike King Jeff Deam Your name could be here Your name could be here Your name could be here Your name could be here Your name could be here Your name could be here Please ship your prints for repackaging to: Gary Benson 9843 Little Diomede Circle Eagle River, Alaska 99577 (907) 242-6538 TO SUCCESSFULLY PARTICIPATE PLEASE READ ALL OF THE GUIDELINES BELOW =================================================================== 1) Prints are to be on larger size papers (for example 11x14", 11x17", 13x19" or A3). Please sign the print (generally done on the front). 2) On about the 5th of the month you will be notified of how many participants there are for each exchange. You are to print one print for each of the other participants AND one for yourself. 3) Prints should be enclosed in individual clear sleeves along with a Tech/Data Sheet. Include the date of the exchange, your name, print title and any information about the subject matter, printer, inkset, software, workflow etc on the Tech/Data Sheet which may be of interest to other participants. Optional: also include your own critique of your image. 4) Make sure that whatever return box or mailing method you use can accommodate the larger sized prints. 5) For example, mailing your prints (addressed to the print exchange coordinator) in a flattened USPS Flat Rate medium size box with an enclosed prepaid USPS Click-n-Ship return label for a Flat Rate Medium size box (addressed to yourself) should work ok, although some US post offices are charging postage based on the actual dimensions of the flattened box instead of the Medium Flat Rate postage. See this message for additional details and images of how others have packaged their prints. 6) If you have not included a return postage pre-paid label please send the print exchange coordinator $16 for the cost of a USPS Flat Rate Medium size box attached to a sheet of paper which clearly shows your return address. 7) Upload a file of the image you have printed into the correct photo album. It permits those that are not actively participating in the current exchange an opportunity to observe. It also creates a historical record that is useful over the years. 8) Comments

Important Reminder: DEC 2023/ JAN 2024 B&W and Color Exchange Early Due Date 19
Hi folks, Happy New Year to everyone! Just a reminder that I would like to receive ALL of the prints for this exchange by Wednesday, January 24th (preferably before then). If I have all the prints I will get them sorted, packed and mailed back to the group before I leave Alaska on the afternoon of the 26th. If I haven't received ALL of the prints by the 24th, I won't be able to send ANY of the prints back to the group before I get home in mid-February. Thus far, I've received Dec/Jan prints from Steve and Rob (thanks guys!!). Now is a good time to start printing, if you haven't already. Gary

Couple of print comments
Happy New Year to all. I don't get time to look at the print exchange photos on a regular basis and often binge a year or two (maybe three) at the same time! Over the holidays I got a chance to look back over the last few years of my sporadic participation. I wanted to make a few comments... First I love the anticipation of opening the packages, even months or years later and all the prints are always good to great. But I have my favorites and I think Otto's machinery photos are awesome especially "Gears etc" from October 22. I love the gold detail and texture. Also I always know that Jayanand's prints are likely to impress. I was inspired by his use of Hahemuhle metallic paper and tried a couple of my own prints on this, but as yet I never had a print that compared with Jayanand. The one that really stood out for me was "My Third Eye" from December 2020 (ok so 3 years ago now!). I can see that as an A1 print on my wall. Thank you all for your prints and especially making A4 work, a size which I personally struggle with. I am submitting some prints for the current A4 exchange, but my heart is in the upcoming A3+. I (think) I have some amazing images to share. Finally at big thank you to Gary for handling all the admin and submitting so many prints of his own. Neither an easy task. All the best, Mike

October/November Exchange 8
I just got back after a week out of town and found the latest exchange prints waiting for me. There have been many excellent exchanges in the past few years but this struck me as one of the strongest. I always debate whether to post any comments - it seems out of the norm relative to other exchange participants, and I always worry that by singling out a few images others will feel I did not appreciate their submissions. That is not the case at all. But I decided what the hell, no one has complained so far and I would feel remiss if I didn¡¯t share my impressions with all of you :) For starters, Nara¡¯s two prints (Siesta and Water Falls) were exceptional. I have been to Masai Mara several times, have seen scores of lions, and have never captured so engaging an image. I am truly envious. And his beautifully composed and printed black and white from the Chader Trek has me considering exploring Ladakh the next time I escape to the Himalayas. All I could think was damn, it must have been a cold day trekking! Jayanand¡¯s Lurking Tusker really showcased his printing skills. I am glad he included a small color version of the original in his data sheet so I could truly appreciate the final monochrome print. Robert¡¯s Homage to PC captured the spirit off Caponigro¡¯s Two Pears. Lovely printing. Perhaps he could be inspired by some of Caponigro¡¯s sea shell or mushroom images next time around :) Robert¡¯s Assemblage made me change my mind about smartphone photos. Very arresting composition. Josh¡¯s Sheep Farmer conveyed so much warmth and happiness. And the dappled lighting was surprisingly effective. S. Prabhakaran¡¯s print of the older woman walking in Padum village captured her with grace and dignity. And it only heightened my desire to do some trekking in Ladakh. Lastly, Rick¡¯s Trichocereus Cactus was an intriguing image with such abstract characteristics I first thought it was a computer generated image. Fabulous! I have thoroughly enjoyed all his color prints of flowers, but this was a delightful deviation. I feel blessed to be a part of this exchange and I thank Gary for the splendid job he does making it all come together. And I thank all of you as well for your consistently rewarding bimonthly submissions. Steve

Mea Culpa 4
I feel the need to explain my habit of commenting on exchange prints. In the late 1970s I fell in with a group of accomplished photographers here in Eugene, and quickly became friends with all of them. Every couple of months six to eight of us would gather over beer and Mexican food and pull out a few of the prints we had been working on. Subject matter varied widely: landscapes, abstractions, portraiture, nudes, you name it. It was all black and white printed in our home darkrooms, none of us had the time or patience for Cibachrome. The film we were working with ranged from 35mm to 4x5. Our approach was simple: all the prints were laid out under good lighting and we went around the group, one person at a time, and shared which two prints we were most drawn to and impressed by. Each person had to say why he or she felt that way about that particular print. It was a very causal, positive exchange. Once in a while one of us would ask for constructive criticism but that was rare. And it turned out that, since we all had our biases about subject matter, printing styles, etc., by the time the evening was over most everyone had been the recipient of at least a few good words. I fear I have carried the spirit of those sessions with me when offering up comments on the exchange web site. I had hoped that my observations would be joined by other group members who felt strongly about prints other than the ones I mentioned. But as one of our participants shared with me, despite my caveats, my singling out a few prints was implicitly dismissive of the ones I didn¡¯t mention (my words, not his). And that troubles me greatly. I went up to my studio and spent quite a while looking over the exchange prints from the past year or so. And I realized there were many, perhaps most, of the prints that I could have - should have - commented on. I recognize that a large part of the problem is my biases, in what I value in a photograph. I am drawn to photographs of nature and wildlife, of people and places outside North America (especially Africa and the Indian subcontinent), to natural abstractions. And though I recognize that the initial focus of this group was on mastering digital printing techniques, it seems that most of us do a damned good job printing nowadays. So I focus on subject matter, composition, etc., all the while viewing though my own filters. If another half dozen of you were offering up your observations as well mine would probably be balanced out. But as it stands I have been guilty of selectivity, and have likely offended several of you who are too polite to tell me so. So¡ the end result of this introspection is that I have decided to stop posting comments on the images in future exchanges. Please know that I have more appreciation for all the work submitted than my past words have expressed. And I will continue to look forward to each box of prints that arrives at my door like a little kid on Christmas morning :) Steve

Large print exchange 11
Thanks for participating last year Rick. I know the large print exchange is more costly and can be a hassle re packaging and mailing the prints. It certainly is on my end. That said, I really enjoy making and seeing the larger prints. We had an higher than usual participation rate last February. I was lucky to have those Ilford portfolio cases to mail the prints back to the US participants. Unfortunately, I don't have any more of those so I'll have to go with the alternate mailing method. For most of us that means the flattened USPS flat rate boxes. I've already selected two of my images for the large print exchange. I made prints of them which I gave to my photo friends here in Anchorage yesterday evening when we met for our annual end of year photo gathering/dinner. Gary

Quad Tone RIP 3
Here is the Groups.io link and to the Quad Tone RIP (QTR) website for anyone who might be interested. Quad Tone RIP was developed by Roy Harrington. /g/QuadToneRIP http://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRoverview.html I think Wes Clavey was thinking about setting up a printer to use monochrome inks and QTR, but I don't know if he has done that yet. I never developed (let alone mastered) the knowlege and skill required to create my own QTR profiles, so I was only able to use the generic profiles available for various types of papers when I made B&W prints with QTR. FINAL DEC 2023/ JAN 2024 B&W and Color Exchange Lists and UPDATED DUE DATE! (Please read!)
I am posting the final lists earlier than usual in order to give everyone an earlier start on selecting images, making their prints and mailing them to me. Why? Because just this morning I remembered that Kathleen and I will be leaving on January 26th for a two week trip to Arizona and New Mexico. Please ship your prints so they arrive in Alaska NO LATER than January 24th. If they arrive after this date I will not be able to include your prints with this exchange. Optional: also include your own critique of your image. 4) Make sure that whatever return box or mailing method you use can accommodate both Letter (8.5x11) and A4 (8.3"x11.7") sized prints. The total number of prints submitted is likely be greater than for the prior monthly print exchanges, so for those participants in the USA a USPS Flat Rate Medium size box is probably the best choice, especially if you are participating in both the B&W and Color print exchanges. 5) For example, mailing your prints (addressed to the print exchange coordinator) in a USPS Flat Rate envelope or medium size box with an enclosed prepaid USPS Click-n-Ship return LABEL for a Flat Rate envelope or medium size box (addressed to yourself) should work very well. New Group Cover Photo Uploaded
As I mentioned, I would like to periodically change the cover photos that will be displayed on the Group's home page . My thought for now is that I'll change these to correspond with the two month duration of each bi-monthly print exchange (so this one will be up from now until the first week of February). I'm happy to change it monthly if people would like to see new photos more often. I'd also be happy to have others provide input on which photos to display. Only a group administrator (myself, Tom or Jayanand) can actually upload and change the cover photo. Gary

Final Update: OCT/NOV Prints 2
Hi folks, I dropped off all of the mailers and boxes at the midtown Anchorage post office this afternoon. I'm not sure if they will get scanned/processed into the USPS system this evening or Monday morning, but they should be on the way to you soon. US participants should receive them in the next 3-5 days. The package to India will take about 2 weeks. This was another very good set of prints for both exchanges! Thanks again to everyone who is participating! Gary

Print Exchange Group Cover Photo 5
Hi folks. We've had the same photo as the "cover image" on the group home page for many, many years. I've thought for several months that it was time for a change. Without a clear idea of how to select an image for display, I just decided to pick an image from a prior print exchange. The image you see on the home page now is one that Josh Daniels printed and submitted for the April/May 2023 color exchange. I'd like to hear any suggestions you might have for updating the group's cover image periodically. My first thought was to alternate black & white and color images from prior print exchanges (that have been uploaded to the Photos albums) on a bi-monthly basis to match our print exchange schedule. The group could leave it to Tom, Jayanand and myself (the group moderators) to pick the image or we could adopt some other process to select an image for temporary display. Your thoughts? Gary

FINAL OCT/NOV 2023 B&W and Color Exchange Lists
We have another full roster with 12 participants for both the B&W and Color print exchange this month! So....it is time to select your images and start printing!
