FINAL DEC 2023/ JAN 2024 B&W and Color Exchange Lists and UPDATED DUE DATE! (Please read!)

I am posting the final lists earlier than usual in order to give everyone an earlier start on selecting images, making their prints and mailing them to me.

Why?? Because just this morning I remembered that Kathleen and I will be leaving on January 26th for a two week trip to Arizona and New Mexico.

Please ship your prints so they arrive in Alaska NO LATER than January 24th.? If they arrive after this date I will not be able to include your prints with this exchange.

The following photographers are signed up for the Black & White exchange:

  1. Tom O'Connell
  2. Gary Benson
  3. Jayanand Govindaraj
  4. Steve Mustoe
  5. Westley Clavey

  8. Jeff Deam
  9. Joshua Daniels
  10. Rick Holmes
  11. S. Prabhakaran
  12. Oscar Avellaneda-Cruz
  13. Mike King

The following photographers are signed up for the Color print exchange:

  1. Tom O'Connell
  2. Gary Benson
  3. Jayanand Govindaraj
  4. Steve Mustoe
  5. Nara Narasimhan

Eagle River, Alaska 99577
(907) 242-6538

?

TO SUCCESSFULLY PARTICIPATE PLEASE READ ALL OF THE GUIDELINES BELOW

===================================================================

1) Prints are to be on either Letter (8.5x11) or A4 (8.3"x11.7") size paper. Please sign the print (generally done on the front).?

2) On the 16th of the month you will be notified of how many participants there are for each exchange.? You are to print one print for each of the other participants and one for yourself.?

3) Prints should be enclosed in individual clear sleeves (for example Clear Bags B811SNF) along with a Tech Sheet. Include the date of the exchange, your name, print title and any information about the subject matter, printer, inkset, software, workflow etc on the Tech Sheet which may be of interest to other participants.? Optional: also include your own?critique?of your image.?

4) Make sure that whatever return box or mailing method you use can accommodate both Letter (8.5x11) and A4 (8.3"x11.7") sized prints.??The total number of prints submitted is likely be greater than for the prior monthly print exchanges, so for those participants in the USA a USPS Flat Rate Medium size box is probably the best choice, especially if you are participating in both the B&W and Color print exchanges.

?5) For example, mailing your prints (addressed to the print exchange coordinator) in a USPS Flat Rate envelope or medium size box with an enclosed prepaid USPS Click-n-Ship return LABEL for a Flat Rate envelope or medium size box (addressed to yourself)?should work?very well. ?See this message for additional details?and images of how others have packaged their prints.

6) If you have not included a return postage pre-paid label please send the print exchange coordinator funds for the cost of a USPS Flat Rate envelope or medium size box (whichever you prefer to use) attached to a sheet of paper which?clearly?shows your return address.?

7) Upload a file of the image you have printed into the?correct photo album.? It permits those that are not actively participating in the current exchange an opportunity to observe.? It also creates a historical record that is useful over the years.?

8) Comments on prints are welcome and encouraged, but are not required for participation in a print exchange.? Any topic or theme for a print exchange is entirely optional.

With best regards,

Gary Benson

Quad Tone RIP

Edited

Here is the Groups.io link and to the Quad Tone RIP (QTR) website for anyone who might be interested.?

Quad Tone RIP was developed by Roy Harrington.

/g/QuadToneRIP

I think Wes Clavey was thinking about setting up a printer to use monochrome inks and QTR, but I don't know if he has done that yet.

I never developed (let alone mastered) the knowlege and skill required to create my own QTR profiles, so I was only able to use the generic profiles available for various types of papers when I made B&W prints with QTR.

Hi Phil:?

A quick recommendation here.?

You can¡¯t go too wrong with wither the Epson 9xx or Canon 1xxx Pro Graf.?

After using Epson for two decades, I switched to Canon a few years back because of ongoing annoyance with Epson. If you¡¯re using the printers continually, you shouldn¡¯t see much in the way of clogs; but in my experience, Canon does much, much better with infrequent usage. I rarely have a clog.?

I¡¯m a huge fan of InkOwl third party inks. The Canon Pro Graf printers use a ¡°tank,¡± not a cartridge. Refilling is easy (and borders on minor glee because of sparing the landfill the empty tanks and the huge cost savings). As a professional photographer and printer of many years, with countless prints to clients using these inks, I can say they give up nothing to the OEMs. I¡¯ve used them both in Canon and Epson printers. The company has stellar service, as well. So great is my confidence, than I run them in my three Prografs, the 1000, and two 2000s.?

The is no perfect inkjet printer! The Canons do require head replacement, periodically (you cannot reasonably replace an Epson printer head). The task is very easy, but the price a pain points. In more than 7 years running two 2000s and a few years with the 1000, I¡¯ve replaced one head.?

Two cents if you can use it!

I wonder if you mean 17¡± or 13¡± for large size. The Epson 700 has all the features of the 900 (including same inset) so that may satisfy your needs, but I really really like the 900. Of course they have both been on the market now for several years, so they may well get updated at some point, but I¡¯m feeling that the 900 will satisfy me for quite a while. Hello Phil! ?I recognize your name from past print exchanges, but my memory is not so good anymore so I can¡¯t recall when you last participated. ?Tom or Jayanand may have better memories. ?(Edit: ?I just searched our messages and with that help my memory is slowly being refreshed. ?I had forgotten that you joined the group in 2013 and volunteered to be the print coordinator/re-packager for 3 quarters in 2015.)

I don¡¯t use QTR very often anymore but I still check in on the QuadtoneRIP group now and then. ?Like our group, they migrated from Yahoo Groups to Groups.io. ?I¡¯m almost certain that QTR still only works with Epson printers. ?I did a search of their group messages and found that the latest versions of QTR do support the 17¡± Epson P900. ?A 17¡± wide size printer is one that many of us here use, primarily the Epson P800/P900 or Canon Pro-1000. ?It is great for producing the Letter/A4 size prints of our regular bi-monthly print exchanges and for the annual large print exchange in February (paper sizes larger than letter/A4 and up to a maximum of 13x19¡±) which is the largest size we can conveniently mail.

Alternatively, you could get one of the less expensive 13¡± wide printers like the Epson P700 or Canon Pro-300. ?The ink cartridges are smaller than those on the 17¡± wide printers, so if you calculate the ink costs in $/ml, you¡¯ll find that the larger ink carts of the 17¡± printers are significantly lower than for the 13¡± printers. ?Of course, each ink cartridge costs more for the 17¡± printers.

Welcome back Phil!

New Group Cover Photo Uploaded

As I mentioned, I would like to periodically change the cover photos that will be displayed on the Group's home page . My thought for now is that I'll change these to correspond with the two month duration of each bi-monthly print exchange (so this one will be up from now until the first week of February).

I'm happy to change it monthly if people would like to see new photos more often.? I'd also be happy to have others provide input on which photos to display.? Only a group administrator (myself, Tom or Jayanand) can actually upload and change the cover photo.
