Marketing help for
7
Hi all, I work just on marketing so I don't making products/books accessible. I'm trying to get together a list of everything I need to work on (I know this is a bit late!) and I feel quite overwhelmed. Where do I start? I find the WCAG website a little much. Is there someone where I should be going? Or training I could do? I've started a list of the areas we need to work on: the company website - alt text is a big area and I'd love examples of good alt text. The ones I've tried to find before feel very dense. email newsletters activity sheets pdfs - what do I need to make these accessible? videos and audio - need captions and transcripts Is there anything I'm missing? And is there any key information/websites I need to use (I guess I just have to get to grips with WCAG website!). I'd happily do training but training seems to cover EVERYTHING rather than have a marketing focus? Is anyone here from a marketing background in publishing and can help me at all? The messages I see on here look to be very technical/book related. Thanks in advance, Claire PS didn't even finish the subject line!!

Distributing accessible ePubs
4
Hi everyone We are a small academic publisher who sells our standard PDF ebooks and printed books through our Silverchair website. However, now that we have started publishing accessible ePubs it is proving massively expensive to add the option to buy ePubs to that site. Does anyone have any recommendation of where we could host and sell our ePub editions in a cost-effective and accessible manner, which we could link to from our main website? Accessibility of Altmetrics and Citations/Dimensions badges
3
Hi all, I am investigating Altmetrics and Citations, both by Digital Science, which involve putting a badge on online ebooks. https://badge-docs.altmetric.com/badge-playground.html From what we understand, they have not done any accessibility testing, and won't have any done by the EAA deadline. Has anybody else worked on this already and have any suggestions or results from internal testing? (I have done a search here that hasn't turned up anything) Thanks! Kirsten

Proper language
2
Does anyone have suggestions for proper language to acknowledge a specific item is not currently conformant to WCAG 2.1 AA, however, it is on our roadmap for a release after the enforcement deadline? It is not really a disproportionate burden, but more of a timing issue. -Rick

<dl> <dt> and <dd> tag query
3
Hi all, I hope you’re all doing well! I had a question about <dl> <dt> and <dd> tags used in EPUBs for Chronology sections. Would this be considered more accessible than simply using a <ul> list? I’m stuck between thinking it would be helpful for a screen reader to distinguish between the term and the description, or if it should even apply to Chronological data as the ‘description’ isn’t actually describing the term – in this case the date and year - I want to avoid creating confusion for the screen reader user, so thought I would check here! Advice online uses Glossaries as an example, so should I stick to using it for these instances alone? Or at all? I’ve provided an example of how it looks in the code below: <dl> <dt class="dt"><span class="bold">January 23–29</span></dt> <dd class="dd">Japanese invade New Britain and quickly prepare airfields near Rabaul to receive IJNAF aircraft</dd> <dt><span class="bold">February 3</span></dt> <dd>First Japanese air raid on Port Moresby from Rabaul</dd> <dt><span class="bold">February 23</span></dt> <dd>First USAAF/RAAF combined raid on Rabaul-area targets</dd> </dl> Any advice would be appreciated! Accessible DOIs
6
Hi all, Sorry if this has come up in previous emails but I have missed it! I was wondering if other publishers are working on making their DOIs accessible also? And if so, for the born-accessible content from June? The last article I have read from Crossref: https://www.crossref.org/blog/accessibility-for-crossref-doi-links-call-for-comments-on-proposed-new-guidelines/ is from 2022, but we’re looking into when Crossref will be making this mandatory also. Grammar book - accessibility
5
Hi all, We are publishing a grammar book about a very rare language, Khowar (one of the Far Northwest Indo-Aryan languages). The author turned on text-to-speech and thinks the pronunciation is not satisfactory and will alienate users. As I understand it the language is so rare there isn’t a language code to support it. The author has now asked that we turn off all accessible functionality because of this issue so we will lose all accessibility features. Has anyone had experience with grammar book and this type of issue? Colour contrast/use of colour ebook compliance failures
6
Hi all, Could anyone offer any advice on colour contrast/use of colour ebook compliance failures? Accessibility testing of our EPUB and PDF files is frequently returning failures for the above. Most of the images we publish are reproduced and we are limited in terms of (1) what we can practically do to amend them and (2) how much manipulation we are allowed to do from a copyright permission angle. I had hoped that inclusion of alt text would nullify these failures and suitable text in our accessibility summary metadata (e.g. “Any colour contrast or use of colour shortcomings are addressed by the provision of alternative text.”) at a title level would suffice. However, our external testing partner has advised me that: “Alternative text is not enough because not everyone can see it. Adding the text as a caption that is visible to all will satisfy this.” This isn’t always going to be straightforward and creates an additional headache for backlist content. Would be grateful for any further advice anyone can offer. Accessible Maps
6
Hi everyone, I was asked a question recently about accessible digitised maps from a librarian friend of mine, and I wondered if anyone on here had any info they’d be willing to share? The question is as follows: We're looking for guidance on making scanned maps accessible. In particular, these maps are not specifically embedded in a published work, or specific to a particular kind of use. What can we do to make these resources meaningfully accessible for a variety of potential users? And are there any existing resources that might help us with that work?’ Apparently the labels on many of these maps is minimal, so using them to generate alt-text is challenging. I’d be grateful for any insights anyone can offer? Noting language shifts
2
Hello! I so appreciate having this group to discuss accessibility best practices with. I have a book written in the English language, but the article titles of some of the References are in a different language. Here are a few examples: Schwartz, S. 1988. Wie Pawlow auf den Hund kam. Die 15 klassischen Experimente der Psychologie (How Pavlov got the idea of the dog: 15 classic experiments in psychology). Weinheim, Germany: Beltz. Sohier, R. 1991. Grundlage der biomechanischen Reharmonisation und Therapie der osteopathischen Gelenkl?sionen als Einführung in das analytische Konzept (Foundations of biomechanical reharmonization and therapy of osteopathic joint lesions as an introduction to the analytic concept). La Louviere, Belgium: Kin-Science. As you can see in the examples, the English translation is also provided in the text. Should these references still have the German titles coded as language shifts in the epub? Thank you! Coree Clark (she/her/hers) Director, Digital Systems Human Kinetics 1607 N. Accessible Fixed Layout
7
Hi, On the topic of FXL ePub (children’s books and highly illustrated books). One of our accessibility concerns around FXL ePub is that we see some publishers making the text part of the image itself (i.e. the page is a single image) which means it cannot be accessed by any “read aloud” function (intrinsic to the reading system or external screen reader software). I shall not name anyone in particular, but it includes some well-known publishing names... For improved accessibility it would be great to have images and text always separated in an FXL ePub and ideally decent image descriptions, too. Sadly the above “each page is a single image” practice is still all too common. I am currently reading the new “Accessibility metadata Display Guide for Digital Publications 2.0” (for implementation within the Jellybooks Cloud Reader) . Section 3.1.2 sort of touches on the subject but without satisfactorily addressing this particular situation. Also the file description “FXL ePub” alone will not tell the reader if they get a “nice” FXL ePub that is maybe reasonably accessible or a “terrible” one that offers next to no accessibility support. The topic is probably more critical for children’s books (FXL ePub being extremely common, even dominant, for ages o to 7) than it is for illustrated non-fiction books aimed at adults. What are other people’s opinion on the matter? Cheers Andrew Andrew Rhomberg founder|Jellybooks email: andrew@... Mobile: +44 797 365 7891 Twitter: @Jellybooks Jellybooks Ltd. Response to updated ADA Title II guidelines
12
Sage is getting many inquiries from institutions concerned about the updated ADA Title II and subsequent requests for 100% compliance in contracts and full liability placed on the provider. Not that this is new, but there's definitely a new urgency. Just curious if anyone in PAAG is encountering similar and how it's all being handled at your company?

Evidence re: benefits of providing print content
Is anyone aware of any empirical evidence re: the positive benefits of providing print content (i.e. print on demand), as an alternative format, from an accessibility point of view? We're getting a steady stream of concerns around neurodiversity and equality of access from customers to whom we've offered e-only products, and were wondering if their concerns are empirically justified? Accessibility metadata for ebooks with media overlays
3
Hi all, A question for ONIX metadata experts – I know there are a few on here. In List 81, does ‘Code 01: Audiobook’ apply only to what is commonly defined as an audiobook, i.e. an audio file with no text content like you’d download from a service like Audible? Or does it also apply to an epub that contains a media overlay with synchronised text-audio playback, say a fiction title that has full narration? I already have ‘Code 20: Synchronised pre-recorded audio’ from List 196. Thanks in advance. Nick --- Nick Bromley Director & Accessibility Consultant Red Kite Digital Accessibility Ltd
