Supernova 2023ixf

Just a heads-up in case anyone hasn¡¯t seen the news. A supernova exploded in M101 three days ago and is rapidly brightening. I captured it last night from my backyard in Alta Vista, in EAA style. M101 is favourably placed in the sky right now and the SN is easy to capture ¡ª not sure what it¡¯s like visually though¡

Thank you very much for the heads up Darryl! ?That would be very cool to see!

Hi Daryl!
Great capture! Last night I was out imaging Flamsteed Catalogue stars in Lynx and Ursa Major. These are wide field images with the intent to locate double star systems near brighter stars. While in Ursa Major, I just happen to snap a 30 second exposure at ISO 1600 and did manage to capture the super nova as well. Comparing it to star magnitudes accessed via Aladin, I am estimating the Vmag at the time of my image at approximately 12.0. According to the Purdue University website, they are estimating the visual magnitude now at 10.8 making it accessible to many backyard scopes if the conditions are good. I have attached a screen shot.?
?
I had to do a bit of manipulation to get your image to reflect a corrected/naked eye orientation. I am curious how your image is being generated. Can you provide some details on equipment and exposure settings. Thank-you!!

Cheers, Chris.

Certainly! Here's my gear setup:

- Skywatcher 72ED
- AZ-GTi with an EQ head
- ASIair pro
- ASI178MC

I'm also using a mirror diagonal since I can't seem to reach focus without it (maybe that is what is causing the confusion) -- I need to get some spacers... :)

I am doing this as EAA, using the live stacking function on the ASIair.? I have my gain maxed at 270 and I play with the histogram a bit to make it more pleasing to my eye. This image was a sum of 118 x 30 second shots, so almost an hour of integration. Then I just took a screenshot. So all in all, not a very sophisticated approach :)

Hi Daryl!
I suspected a diagonal in the train!! Have you considered getting some extension tubes in place of the diagonal to reach focus??

Thanks for the equipment profile!!

Cheers, Chris.

Yeah. I'm going to be in Montreal this weekend and plan to drop into Maison de l'astronomie. I usually use a reducer / flattener and I can reach focus, but for galaxy season I took it off to get more magnification and then got lazy :-)

Hi Daryl!
Final obvious question¡was that a cropped or full frame image of M 101? Having a couple extension tubes¡1 and 2 inch versions provides some options! :-)

Cheers, Chris.

Hi Chris! Sorry, I should have mentioned, it is cropped ¡ª I usually get some strange banding around the borders which I have been told is normal, but unattractive ?
