Two outreach opportunities in October
Greetings all,
We have some opportunities for sidewalk astronomy coming this month that I would like to gauge everyone's interest in: 1.? Saturday, October 14th Annular Solar Eclipse? - From Ottawa we will see a partial solar eclipse, max coverage ~20% - Timing for 1st to 4th contact is 12:06pm to 2:23pm, with maximum occurring at 1:14pm - propose we have a sidewalk session dedicated just to solar observing around the eclipse times - can promote the 2024 total eclipse 2.? Saturday, October 21st First Quarter Moon - Good timing for a traditional evening sidewalk event - Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, & Pluto all visible - Summer Milky Way visible in West after sunset (for us video astronomers), M31 & M45 visible later - Could do afternoon + evening to give some solar viewing as well and night viewing - I am prepared to bring a generator & table for handouts but not looking for "Astronomy Day" level effort I would propose, if we do host these two events, that we do them at our usual spot in the Chapters parking lot.? If you are interested in supporting either of these events, please let me know ASAP so I can decide if we will go ahead and then get a notice out on our Facebook Group. Cheers! Jim Thompson |

Hello Jim!
Really happy to see these public outreach in the works! : ) Sadly, both opportunities won't be possible for me, with family plans on the 14th (so a backyard setup for the eclipse). ?And leaving on the 20th for a week long trip down south. But I can transfer you some of the outreach material and large signs, cones, etc. ?if you'd like to have them. In November, my schedule should free up more for more events that we might plan : ) Clear skies! - Pierre |
Thank you everyone who has indicated they are willing to volunteer for the Partial Solar Eclipse event this Saturday.? The cloud forecast models are iffy at the moment; we may have some clear skies but in the form of sucker holes ... fingers crossed!? I am proceeding with my own planning assuming the event is a GO.? A final call will be made on Friday.? Some notes for planning purposes:
- We will not have power available for this event, so please plan to come self sufficient battery powered. - I plan to arrive around 11am to start setting up.? First contact is scheduled to occur at 12:06pm for our location. - I will be bringing some old magazines, a couple Sun observing and eclipse posters, plus a big load of eclipse glasses (big thanks to Andrea Girones!) - I will bring a 3' x 6' folding table - Dress for the weather.? It is forecast to be 8-10degC, and it is always windy at this location.? Warm socks, toque, gloves, and warm jacket are recommended. Cheers, Jim T. |
Good afternoon all.? The cloud models for tomorrow do not look great, but I am calling the solar eclipse event a GO.? We could get some sucker holes between noon and 2:30.? I think it is important to still get out and inform the public of the total eclipse coming in April, and to hand out eclipse glasses.? If those who said they'd volunteer change their minds due to the clouds, that is cool with me.? Just send me an email so I know who is and isn't coming.
Cheers, Jim T. |
The forecast does not look good for this weekend (Oct. 21-22); lots of rain and clouds.? Unless there is a dramatic change in the forecast I'd say an evening event this Saturday is not going to happen.? Let's keep our eyes out for a clear night in the coming weeks.? Hopefully we get one last opportunity to do a sidewalk session before it gets too cold.
Cheers, Jim T. |
