Hi Daryl!
Final obvious question…was that a cropped or full frame image of M 101? Having a couple extension tubes…1 and 2 inch versions provides some options! :-)

Cheers, Chris.

Hi Daryl!
I suspected a diagonal in the train!! Have you considered getting some extension tubes in place of the diagonal to reach focus??

Thanks for the equipment profile!!

Cheers, Chris.

?Certainly! Here's my gear setup:

- Skywatcher 72ED
- AZ-GTi with an EQ head
- ASIair pro
- ASI178MC

I'm also using a mirror diagonal since I can't seem to reach focus without it (maybe that is what is causing the confusion) -- I need to get some spacers... :)

I am doing this as EAA, using the live stacking function on the ASIair.? I have my gain maxed at 270 and I play with the histogram a bit to make it more pleasing to my eye. This image was a sum of 118 x 30 second shots, so almost an hour of integration. Then I just took a screenshot. So all in all, not a very sophisticated approach :)

Stellar Archeology

Hello OAOG? -- I never heard this phrase before I listened to this podcast (n.b. I was driving, so I didn't see the youtube version) : .? It's long at ~2 hours, but very interesting about cosmology, stellar evolution, and especially this idea of understanding the early universe by studying very old stars that were formed before enough supernovas had spewed out heavier elements.? Enjoy -- Michael

Re: Supernova 2023ixf

Hi Daryl!
Great capture! Last night I was out imaging Flamsteed Catalogue stars in Lynx and Ursa Major. These are wide field images with the intent to locate double star systems near brighter stars. While in Ursa Major, I just happen to snap a 30 second exposure at ISO 1600 and did manage to capture the super nova as well. Comparing it to star magnitudes accessed via Aladin, I am estimating the Vmag at the time of my image at approximately 12.0. According to the Purdue University website, they are estimating the visual magnitude now at 10.8 making it accessible to many backyard scopes if the conditions are good. I have attached a screen shot.?
?
I had to do a bit of manipulation to get your image to reflect a corrected/naked eye orientation. I am curious how your image is being generated. Can you provide some details on equipment and exposure settings. Thank-you!!

Cheers, Chris.

Just a heads-up in case anyone hasn’t seen the news. A supernova exploded in M101 three days ago and is rapidly brightening. I captured it last night from my backyard in Alta Vista, in EAA style. M101 is favourably placed in the sky right now and the SN is easy to capture — not sure what it’s like visually though…

Re: Anyone going/been to starfest ?

I've been going to starfest since 1991. (Missed one because of
sickness). Never had anything stolen.

But during one starfest, Doug George had a digital-setting circle box
stolen off his scope. This greatly upset a lot of people. Much
invective was cast against he unknown assailant for violating our
tribe's mutual trust. Starfesters naturally watch out to protect
each-other's stuff.

I would keep unattended scopes covered. Still, the risk is very low.
And people will help watch your stuff.

Hello Bojan,

Generally, a star party / camping event like Starfest is great to be able to setup, align and leave your mount and scope for the duration of your stay. Quite safe to being with so much company. I would just make sure not to leave small accessories like eyepieces and filters around when you are away. Scopes are best covered up with reflective material for sunny days or water proof tard in case it rains.

Cheers!

Gabfest tonight…

Good afternoon all!
?
A quick reminder that tonight is the OAOG gabfest at the usual Tim Horton on Innes near the old Costco. ?Usual start time 7pm.
?
I would love to go, but unfortunately I have a busy evening.
?
I’d highly recommend attending if you can. ? The promo for Astro Day has generated a significant amount of interest, with some new people wanting to meet us and get to know the group :)

I’ll miss the fun tonight but looking forward to setting up sidewalk astronomy very soon!
?
Cheers!

Hi?
?I have been going on and off for many years. I have always felt very safe. I am going this year as well. I meet up with a group of women, but there is usually also a group of men that go from Ottawa as well .

During the day, I have my telescope, all wrapped up in a tarp, and it is right next to my tent. You get to know your neighbours pretty fast as it is pretty crowded and your neighbours will of course, notice if strange people are ?crawling through your stuff.
I left my gear out all the time. No problem.?

I'm curious what the safety of gear looks like. If you need to go to the bathroom or leave the campsite obviously tearing down your gear is impractical. Anyone have any experience with going there and what the safety landscape looks like? Have there ever been any thefts ?

Astronomy Day 2023: NO-GO

Good afternoon everyone,

It is with great disappointment that I must declare the Spring 2023 Astronomy Day event a NO-GO. The weather forecast is quite certain that both Saturday and Sunday will be rainy. We were also considering a contingency plan of a smaller event tonight, but it looks like we will be clouded over before supper time.? Thank you everyone for your interest in our event. The members of the OAOG have been re-invigorated by your excitement, and so plan to host smaller impromptu events as weather allows during this Summer & Fall. We will also look into another full-day event in the Fall, Sept. 22nd to be specific. Please stay tuned to this Group or our Facebook page for announcements of these events. Clear skies!

Jim Thompson
