KBscale X Narrow Planet
5
Narrow Planet is pleased to announce that we will shortly become the exclusive stockist of the KBscale O14 narrow gauge range (7mm:ft scale running on 14mm gauge track). KBscale proprietor David Janes has been working to restock the range following a busy period of family life, and has decided to partner with us for fulfilment to ensure a smooth supply. It is anticipated that virtually the full range of locomotives, rolling stock and track parts will be available. All stock status enquiries should be made via Narrow Planet in the first instance, and an accurate stock level will be maintained on our website, www.narrowplanet.co.uk. What is now the KBscale range was formerly marketed by Roy C Link, who researched and established track standards for accurate 2' gauge modelling in 7mm:ft scale. David has subsequently added his own products, with possible future developments to come. Online sales are expected to begin around the end of August, and items will be also be available from our exhibition stand. Upcoming exhibitions this year include Uckfield MRC, Expo Narrow Gauge? in Swanley, and the Warley NEC show. Get in touch by email at info@..., or write to us with a SAE for price list at: Narrow Planet, PO Box 297, Bexhill-on-Sea, TN40 9HF, UK

Brass 3D Printed Point Levers
5
I have had Shapeways print some point levers for me in brass. They can be seen in my photo album at /g/o14/photo/33470/13?p=Created,,,20,1,0,0 and /g/o14/photo/33470/14?p=Created,,,20,1,0,0 They are based on a prototype found at the Illawarra Light Railway Museum and originally from a cane railway in Queensland. The lever is connected to the central pivot. It has a lot of free movement before it comes into contact with the triangular section. The point rod is connected to the bottom spacer of the triangle. This means there is a lot of movement of the lever for a small amount of movement of the rod; making it very unlikely for the lever to accidentally move to the other position. I have used them to operate a couple of sets of points (but have not yet added a switch to change the frog polarity). The are robust enough to take some punishment. However, the the lever can't hold the blades over without a bit of extra friction being added. If the blades drive the lever (i.e using a point motor) the lever can flop over to the other stop in a quite realistic manner. I have opened a Shapeways shop under the designer name "mjm57". This is mainly to show off some of my designs rather than to make my fortune. If anyone does want some point levers please send me a note and I will remove the markup for O14 members. All I ask is that I can see the final result. Regards, Michael Milway.

O14 model suppliers

Hello All, i usually read all the messages but seldom post as I have an On3 layout. I model the Colorado and Southern. I have recently made an agreement with a friend to purchase two Backwoods Miniature Garratt kits. These kits are correct gauge at 14mm My my plan is to build both locos and a small portable layout. My layout would fit inside my Honda Pilot and I will show it at various shows around Toronto. Who are are the best sources for South African rolling stock and parts in 7mm scale? There is nothing around my neck of the woods. I am a South African and grew up around the NG 16’s and have always wanted to model them. Now it’s time before I am too old. Gauges and Crossing Jigs
5
Following the demise of the Peco IL-115 I have been looking at the available rail options. The closest profile to the IL-115 is the Micro Engineering ME83. The Peco IL-83 is also suitable, but has a slightly narrower head. This could actually be a benefit when modelling portable track as the narrow head can give the impression of a lighter rail weight. The standards gauge and crossing jigs originated by Roy were cut on a pantograph so I have redrawn them in CAD for cutting on my CNC and can now easily and quickly produce variants as required. I've made new standards gauges and crossing jigs for the IL-83 and ME83 rail to be used with the portable track components. The IL-115 types will also still be available in case someone has a stockpile of the rail somewhere. I will also have a standards gauge for the Karlgarin 82/7 for "mainline" use. Is there a need for crossing jigs for the 82/7 rail? I am going to draw one with the 1:6 ratio to start with. If anyone has some suggestions let me know. Best wishes David

Double Fairlies
5
Evening all, Well I got to have a good chat with Paul (EDM) at Doncaster Dome during the Gauge O Guild event, so that has sorted a few things out. This may seem an obvious question, but what are the differences between the various Double Fairlies? Obviously there are open and enclosed cabs, and on ‘The Earl’ there are the angled water tanks. I am sure one of them had square sandboxes rather than cylinders, but can anyone highlight the visible differences for me - or suggest a good reference source? Rich

New member - O14 Wheels
24
Hello all, Im a new member to the group, but myself and a friend are looking at building some FR pre-preservation era rolling stock in O-14, with the intention of progressing to a layout at some point! Part of me says that backwards thinking, but it works for us! The chaps over on rmWeb (some of whom are here as well I believe) have been very helpful and we have some basic principals worked out (see this thread ( https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/144400-014-trackwork/ ) if anyone is interested). Can anyone point me in the direction of FR style wheel sets or axles for 14mm? I thought Slaters would have been an option but they don't see to offer narrow gauge wheels in the right sizes for this? I cannot see anything on the 7mmNGA shop either, so any help would be appreciated. First on our hit list are the two and three-ton slate wagons, followed by the four-wheeled Quarryman's coaches. Yes, we know there are kits available for them but we are looking to build some experience with scratch building and designing etched sheets. The aim is to see if we can get a high enough quality out of it, so that we can then progress onto things where there are not kits available. Any help or pointers would be appreciated. Rich

Simplex video and Markits outside cranks
6
That Simplex is brilliant! On a completely different subject, Markits have now brought out the Romford keyed outside cranks and axles in 14mm gauge (I got mine from the ever-helpful Dave at Roxey Mouldings). These are a really excellent product, as reviewed in Narrow Lines 230, April 2018. However, on the 14mm axles the back-to-back distance between the inner faces of the cranks is 26.4mm. This is fine for locos built to scale - e.g. on the L&B’s Lyn the width across the outside of the frames would be 22.2mm (the Mannings would be tighter at 26.2mm). However most 7mm ng kits are of course designed for 16.5mm gauge, with the frame dimensions widened to suit. You may therefore need to narrow the frames if building a loco kit using the Markits axles (and guess who’s now trying to work out how to best do that on an already built set of frames…). RTR O14 Track

I understand the EMGS has commissioned Peco to make RTR track in EM gauge. http://www.emgs.org/society-announces-ready-to-lay-em-gauge-track/ Does this mean we ought to seriously consider doing something similar for O14 track and crowdfunding it, etc. What does everybody think? John

New Gears and Wheels from Locos n stuff
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone on the Group. I hope Santa brought you all that you deserved! I must have been good as I got the WDLR Companion book, so I can finally read through it properly (rather than the quick flick through before it was confiscated!). Mark Clarke of Locos n stuff posted just before Christmas that he has had to find a new supplier of wheels and pulleys and also took the opportunity to source some metal worms and worm wheels. See the item a little down his home page: https://www.locosnstuff.com/ The new wheels are blackened steel ready mounted on a brass pin pointed axle. The gears are Mod 0.4 and look to be 13:1 ratio. They have a centre to centre of about 5mm so I don’t think they will be a direct replacement for Tenshodo gears. I know that metal gears tend to be a bit noisier than plastic ones but I prefer them as they don’t split. The only relationship I have with Locos n stuff is as a satisfied customer and I am looking forward to these products in the new year. Cheers, Robin

KB Scale rail bender and coupler pins
12
Hello, David. I don’t seem to have an email address for David Janes, so am resorting to contacting via the group. I received the above items last week, following exchanges here last month, but have only got around to user the bender today. It works a treat and I am delighted. One small query, please. I built a couple of your Hudson chassis and the axles are too tight a fit. The top hat bearings were pushed home tight into the moulded holes in the axle box, should I have actually made them flush to the axle box surface? Richard Goring Sent from Mail for Windows 10
