Backwoods Miniatures Garratt

Hi
I have a Backwoods Miniatures NGG16 Garratt, and after a mechanical problem on one engine unit the (Falhaber? Grandt Line?) gears are beginning to slip on their shafts.
I’ve spoken with Loctite re. suitable adhesives or retainers, but they recommend different solutions depending on whether the gears are nylon or a hard plastic such as PTFE.
Can anyone advise on what the gears are made of, and/or suggest alternative ways of dealing with the problem?
Needless to say I hope to fix things with the motor and gears in situ - anyone who has built this kit will understand why disassembly is a last resort!

They're Grandt Line parts and are made of Delrin.
Delrin being a trade name the material is Acetal.
Its famously non stick.

How skillful are you with a small drill because the proper engineering answer is to drill through the boss and axle and pin it with a bit of wire.
If you manage the hole then mix some 5 min epoxy to coat the wire as you push it it. Probably won't stick to the delrin but it'll stop the wire coming out

I’d go with Paul’s method. If you can get all the way through, use copper wire which you can bend over so it won’t fall out but will easily pull out if needed.

Thanks Paul and Frank
The mention of Delrin confirmed my worst fears!?
Unfortunately the position of the gears on the armature shaft and axle respectively make it almost impossible to get a drill in place, whilst the gears themselves are bevelled with little or no shoulder to drill into, so a mechanical fixing isn’t really possible.
I guess I’ll just have to rely on the motor on the other engine unit to power the loco - luckily it will never be handling more than a couple of bogie wagons (hardly a Garratt load, but I don’t have acres of layout space…)
Otherwise it just confirms my prejudices against relying on push-fit gears!
Again, thanks for the quick response.

I guess that answers my "how good are your small drilling skills"
?
I've got an NGG16 upside down on my desk in front of me and I can clearly see a boss and I think its drillable.
This one has much bigger issues having suffered mog induced flight off a customers layout followed by a sudden stop on a tiled floor

Hi Paul

Being O14 rather than O16.5 the boss is hard up against the back of the driving wheel and obscured by the brake rigging, so there’s precious little space to play with. Still, that does sound like a challenge….!

And at least my loco only suffers from builder’s incompetence (ie by me) rather than feline attention - although the cat probably thought it was great fun, even if the owner didn’t.

Future proofing may require drilling the cat to secure it. I suspect the model might be easier.
