Re: 7mm Scale Track Components

No one has mentioned Kalgarin who produces L&B specific track. Maybe Richard can help.

Search O 21mm gauge Railway Models

It’s a small group, Toby Jones work is stunning, and should be in the review.

Dafydd

Are you looking for chaired track? - rather uncommon on NG lines?

However I’m a member of the SSMRS- former secretary. But I’m down in Buckinghamshire.

For flat bottom rail, I suggest Kalgarren rail which is correct section with the height equaling the width.

Are you aware of O-21 Facebook group. Where you find myself, Keith Fothergill and Toby Jones who is doing some magnificent modelling of the North Devon & Dorset clay lines.

Re: 7mm Scale Track Components

David,?
I used S scale rail and chairs for my Dinas layout and have been a member on and off since helping to build the MRC Thame layout back in the 70s. Currently I am not a member. Back when Dinas was built it was whitemetal chairs and bullhead rail code 90. It’s now code 87 and plastic chairs which should be just as effective. I could beg a favour of a friend who is a member but first suggest we see if anyone else here is an active member. Or pay up ?25 and join. The gazette has some useful articles with some ideas that are certainly ‘lateral thinking’ when compared with mainstream 4 and 7mm modelling.?

good luck

Paul?

7mm Scale Track Components

Thinking about 7mm scale track components for a 3ft narrow gauge project and after a wee look through the www I had a ding moment, S Scale standard gauge track components which I was happy to see would probably suit us.

Unfortunately the S Scale Society only sell parts to their membership, I don't suppose we have a member of the S Scale Society on this forum, preferably but not essential who lives in Scotland willing to order some parts for me?

Re: KB Scale Lister Brake Shoes

It's Light Railway Stores now isn't it? but it does list that kit as out of stock?

Re: Narrow Gauge & Industrial Railway Modelling REVIEW

Edited

Review?132 is now at the printers for distribution at the end of this month.

This issue is an American special. We lead with a detailed study into the history of Yellow Aster Gold Mine with its unusual 18ins and 30ins railways with mixed gauge track and slewing switches. The Maine two-footers are well covered by a new drawing of the SR&RL Baldwin No.24 and an On2 layout of a proposed and part-built extension to the SR&RL. We have drawings of the ALCO War Dept 2-6-2t in as-built form and as varied in subsequent lives on two French systems. We complete the story of the British Colombian On3 mine layout as featured in REVIEWs 129-131. We also present a new HO dock switching layout project based on the Santa Fe China Basin which was only accessible by car float. Finally we show some of the USA built locos that came to Britain.

Contents:
  • Yellow Aster Gold Mine?- Dan Quine describes the history of this Sierra Nevada mine and its 30ins and 18ins gauge railways, with prototype photos, scale drawings and plans
  • Sandy River & Rangeley Lakes Baldwin 2-6-2 No.24?- Drawn and described by Stephen D Phillips with prototype photos and 1:48 scale drawings
  • New Sharon?- Bob Harper describes his On2 layout of a proposed Maine two-footer
  • ALCO War Dept 2-6-2T?- 1:48 Scale drawings by David Pomeroy of the as-built WD version, Pithiviers No.22 and Chemin de fer Froissy-Dompierre No.9, with protoype photos
  • Anyox Mine - Locos and Rolling Stock?- Gerald Harper describes the scratch-built models on his On3 British Columbian layout
  • Pier 101?- Stuart Firth describes his HO dock layout project inspired by Sante Fe's China Basin, with prototype photos
  • Americans in Britain?- Prototype photos of USA built SG locos from the camera of Sydney A Leleux

Re: Scale7 Group National Meet at Mark, Somerset, Saturday 8th October 2022

If I can find all the materials, I'm hoping to run my have-a-go sessions where you make a small section of spiked track to take away and keep.

Groups IO seems to have redacted the email for lunch pre-booking. It is:?info AT scaleseven.org.uk

It will be good to meet up with friends again.

That is stunning Giles, I might send you my Baldwin for a ‘Tweak’!? That’s the sort of running I was hoping for but I’m not quite there yet.? Further investigation has revealed that one of the uninsulated wheels has a very pronounced wobble so I need to investigate the little brass bush that has been pressed into the wheel.

I absolutely agree about the HI 1320 - a lovely motor, and greatly better than the mashimas. I'm fitting one with a load-hauler gearbox to my Gas works Peckett, which being RC will only get fed 3.7V max, so I need it's low end performance.

Here's a short piece of it running.

Some years ago I bought a 90% completed one which didn't run well. A tweak to the quartering sorted it to smooth and acceptable, and a stay-alive on the DCC made it wonderful!

Duncan,

Yes I left the brim of the hat behind the crank.? At the time I didn’t have any small diameter bearings so I had to open out the hole in the crank quite a bit.? You have to be careful as the plastic is quite soft and I think it would be quite easy to get the enlarged hole off centre.

Regards,

Robin

I like your use of the top hat bearings as I am intrinsically lazy (sorry efficient).? Am i correct in assuming? you left the brim of the hat behind the crank ?

I have one of these to build as well.?

Mine is an early version with motor included, though might look at changing for one of EDM’s new motor drive combinations with those comments about slow speed running.?

Shall have to bookmark Robin’s build notes for when I do mine. Remember Dave Taylor building one and having issues with cracked cranks and suggested easing the holes and securing with loctite.?

It is a well thought out kit but many of the parts are small fabrications from etched brass and I found them very fiddly! One area that I really struggled with was the pick-ups. One side is live which is okay, the other side has an etched strip which is intended to wipe the back of the wheel rims. Space is tight and I just couldn’t get this to work properly in 014. My eventual solution was to bend this strip over its fixing bolt so that it now wipes on the wheel tread rather than the back of the rim. It was really fiddly to fit as space is so tight but so far seems to be working acceptably.

One thing to bear in mind is that the instructions (like so many kits) are on a CD/DVD which was a great idea at the time but many mobile devices don’t have these drives.? I think some manufacturers are now making their instructions either downloadable or just putting them on line.? However, I suspect someone on here would be able to help if you have any difficulties yourself.

There are a few brief words on my build on my website including what I did to the plastic cranks.

I wish I had thought about Paul’s High Level motor upgrade as the Mashima doesn’t appear to have the slow speed performance I desire.? I may try changing it to see if it helps.

I agree Duncan, one of my cranks was already split before fitting so I carefully bored them out to take 2mm top hat brass bushes.? The brass takes the stress induced by the Loctite used to retain the cranks when quartering is set and stops any stress getting to the plastic crank itself.? For completely different reasons I have replaced my cranks with brass ones cut from 1mm thick bar.? Generally these have worked well but I think I have got the centres wrong on one of the gearbox drive shaft cranks.? Mine runs better but not as well as I would like for shunting at exhibitions.? I think I need to remove the offending crank, fill the crankpin hole and re-drill to the right centres. Just need to find out which crank is wrong! I don’t know how I managed to get the centres wrong as they were all jig drilled the same but I suspect that a surface imperfection threw the small diameter drill off a bit.

I have one built but not running properly yet in O14. My issue has been keeping the plastic cranks quartered, I'm on my 2nd set and still having problems. I intend fretting out some replacements from brass. You also need to watch the clearance for the cranks on the springs which protrude from the chassis. I still think its a great kit and builds up with character.
