I was a late adopter, I started modelling in 014 around 2016. Inspirations include?seeing Roy Link and his lunchbox layout at Greenwich around 1989, when I had an 012 model of the Groudle Glen Railway. More recently, the Abbey Light Railway and Tony's Forest as portable layouts. I recall we had a substantial 014 at Burton around 2018 or so. Time for another? I have also been experimenting with 021 for small 3' gauge prototypes. David |

Nothing wrong with 15.75mm for the Corris - see our about page which states:

Hi all and thanks for the mention Robin. I’ve no idea when I joined the yahoo group but started 014 modelling back around 2005 with the Port Wynnstay England locos. It’s still a niche scale/gauge which suits me fine! ?
There must be many who model in 014 and are neither members of the 7mm NGA nor here, my daughter’s fiancé for one who is slowly accumulating stock for a Col Stevens ?era WHR layout of Croesor Junction.?
Thanks must go to Paul Martin for assisting us with his products.?
So happy 20th birthday to the group. Maybe next year as it will be 21, we should storm the Burton show? ?Oh wait - my Corris layout is 15.75mm gauge….?

Yes happy anniversary to fellow O14ers. I'm not sure Mark is still on the group or even active in O14. This was originally a Yahoo group and I joined as member no.2. We were an early transition to groups.io so didn't have to pay (shh it's still free).
?
It is also just over 10 years since I exhibited the PLR at ExPong. That was a great day alongside David with Rhyd and David Malton with his ALR.
?
After nearly 3 years the PLR is installed now with the traverser built for ExPong14 and I've nearly completed the circuit of hidden track which will enable the grandchildren to drive trains nose to tail - they're still a bit young for shunting. Thoughts are turning towards more locos, a large rake of clay wagons and the tippler.
?
It's a shame Lionheart's plans for nearly RTR O14 were thwarted by their choice of wheels, but good news that Paul is providing conversion services for these and the Bachmann QHs.
?
O14 will probably always be a niche within a niche, but then that is perhaps what makes it special.
?
My biggest regret was not being able to chat to someone I think I recognised (a lead singer of a famous band - who you may ask!) at a trackwork demo I gave as someone else kept me talking too long.

开云体育Likewise, happy birthday to us! ? As to the significant achievements over the past 20 years, I find that tricky to answer.? I think Rhyd and it’s subsequent extensions in it’s permanent home is a fine example as is Paul Holmes historical FR layout.? I know that Paul is also amassing quite a collection of modern day FR stock too and the time he is taking on getting the Mountaineer details right is very commendable.? John Clutterbuck’s layout at Expo NG is one of my memorable highlights and I believe it is settling in to its new home. ? These are but a few of the examples I can think of at the moment but I suspect that there are many other 014 layouts and projects out there. ? As for products, I think we have Paul Martin (EDM Models) to thank for pushing 014 as much as he can, both with RTP track (which I don’t think sold as well as hoped) and regauging the Lionheart and Bachmann locos. ? I guess that answers my "how good are your small drilling skills"
?
I've got an NGG16 upside down on my desk in front of me and I can clearly see a boss and I think its drillable.
This one has much bigger issues having suffered mog induced flight off a customers layout followed by a sudden stop on a tiled floor |
Re: Backwoods Miniatures Garratt
开云体育Thanks Paul and FrankThe mention of Delrin confirmed my worst fears!? Unfortunately the position of the gears on the armature shaft and axle respectively make it almost impossible to get a drill in place, whilst the gears themselves are bevelled with little or no shoulder to drill into, so a mechanical fixing isn’t really possible. I guess I’ll just have to rely on the motor on the other engine unit to power the loco - luckily it will never be handling more than a couple of bogie wagons (hardly a Garratt load, but I don’t have acres of layout space…) Otherwise it just confirms my prejudices against relying on push-fit gears! Again, thanks for the quick response. Allan On 8 Nov 2024, at 15:19, Frank Sharp via groups.io <frank.j.sharp@...> wrote:

开云体育I’d go with Paul’s method. If you can get all the way through, use copper wire which you can bend over so it won’t fall out but will easily pull out if needed. ? Frank ? From: [email protected] <[email protected]> On Behalf Of Paul Martin

Backwoods Miniatures Garratt
Hi
I have a Backwoods Miniatures NGG16 Garratt, and after a mechanical problem on one engine unit the (Falhaber? Grandt Line?) gears are beginning to slip on their shafts.
I’ve spoken with Loctite re. suitable adhesives or retainers, but they recommend different solutions depending on whether the gears are nylon or a hard plastic such as PTFE.
Can anyone advise on what the gears are made of, and/or suggest alternative ways of dealing with the problem?
Needless to say I hope to fix things with the motor and gears in situ - anyone who has built this kit will understand why disassembly is a last resort! |
Re: Track Making Demo 19th October
Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts. After the both of us escaping Covid for 4 years it is proving not a bad as we feared it would be. Perhaps I'll even get some work done on the PLR.
?
@Robin - I certainly plan on visiting next year, but I probably won't volunteer demoing again as my 1 out of 3 attendance record is pretty poor. And as @Paul says I'm beginning to forget how to make track - or at least pack all the things needed for a demo.
?
All the best
John
