HF packet data rates
New here, so sorry if this is a rehash……. I have been running packet on U/HHF for a long time so typically 1200 or 9600 rate, but i am trying to extend my node reach and looking at HF, ?typically HF was limited to 300 baud but i was wondering if this network was still using 300 on HF or if you have moved up to 1200?
thanks

Welcome to HF Packet, Bob. Network105 traditionally uses 300 baud AX.25, however, due to the limitations being lifted there have been members here experimenting successfully with 600 baud and higher.

I'm sure after reading your post, they'll come out to comment. :-)

Hiya Chris,
?
I actually re-started this discussion just about a year ago :)
?
Sadly, due to hurricanes, I've been off-air (rip G5RV) for the past 6 months

and this recap of mine specifically,
?

The conclusion I and some other Canadian+USA (north-East coast) Hams is that if everyone keeps an recently updated Soundmodem around and enabled a few options (FX25 at a minimum) then 600Baud on the 2nd modem / 'B' slot can work fine. You can also tell various terminal software (EasyTerm) to connect by Port A (300 Baud, normal offset+freq) or Port B (600 baud). It's a bit tricky, but you can config them to do beaconing sequentially without interruptions too

Note, that people must ensure (especially with trying 600/1200 baud) that their center frequencies and radios are decently calibrated so we don't overstep the main Network105 (14.105 LSB) frequency :)

开云体育Hi MichaelSee attached as an example of a mfj1270b manual. There are dip switches on the rear panel that control the serial port speed and the radio speed….. should be covered in the manual,if not i have a couple of snips from the manual with tables of the switch settings. Hi Micheal, what are you going to use for a tnc (modem), are you using a hardware based tnc , or a sound card based tnc?
?
what is your plan to run a node or just connect to nodes and people using rf?
?
will you be doing vhf packet or HF packet, i am just running 300 baud on HF.
?
there is lots of info on the internet related to packet radio, but i will help however i can….

开云体育Well, if you like rag-chewing you can come up to 10M. We've got Packet, RPR, VARAC, FreeData and APRS. We're getting the most use out of the frequency we can. (28.148USB dial)73 de n5pwp Mike On 1/15/2025 4:54 PM, Michael Boudreaux

Hi,
I don't have any links on how to use the MFJ TNC for use on 104? a very nice thing to
try don't know if possible activity in Australia or Beyond. Can someone provide a few links for me to try?

Wow. That's an expensive radio to dedicate to packet. But it's simple really.? Does the rig have a built in sound card? If so the configure your direwolf to talk to it. Tune to the relevant frequency and then listen for data. You will see received packets on the direwolf screen. Now you need software. Direwolf is just a modem. Once you have that working you will need to connect some software to it. Winlink is one. BPQ is another. Even JNOS would work. But until you connect the software to the modem the received data is useless. Mark NI2O On Wed, Jan 15, 2025, 17:10 Michael Boudreaux VE3XZ via <vk3xz=[email protected]> wrote:

Hi Mike,
Thank you Kindly for the offer. I have not tried VARAC but I am very keen to try it. I wonder what Output Power
would ne required on 10 Meters to be successful? I have 400 watts Legal Limit available but usually use 20-30 watts on FT8,
But find FT8 an anti-social Mode. I have an End fed on 10-80 at 15 Meters(50 feet)? on a 2 Acre Block of Land. 2 15 Meter Telescoping Towers 6M beam 2M ground plane, dual Band Satellite Yagi 2m 70cm. I do sstv on ISS and HF. I have many digital Interfaces, 2 FTDX transceivers, 2Yaesu FT8900 Transceivers(fm), Transverter with Elad FDM Duo * 2.? I have some experience but enjoy RagChew. Thanks for any Guidance Mike B vk4sy Woodhill Queensland 4285 Australia |
Hi Mark,
So Dire Wolf is the Most likely software to use with My MFJ Modems? Would that be correct?
I will try and locate DireWolf software as I don't know the others you mention but I know of Dire Wolf a little.
Maybe the others you mention are better. I would certainly like to get receive working quickly. Please advise.
thank you Mike vk4sy vk3xz |
