Another accelerometer clock

Sean Voisen

I know it's kind of a gimmick, but I've been having fun with the
accelerometer-in-a-clock idea.
My dad has the first one. For those who haven't seen the nixie
version:

My new one is smaller and uses IV-9 "numitrons." Video:

I'll be selling the new one as a kit (without the accelerometer
feature) hopefully in January for those that may be interested.

Since numitrons are filamentary, I'm pretty sure excessive shaking is
a bad idea, hence the use of a button to switch modes. Of course,
IV-9s are also relatively cheap, so maybe I should conduct some
experiments.

Cheers,
Sean

Thanks Terry.? It was this project that inspired me.

Howdy y'all;

I'm rather new to Nixies, however I've seen them before and I'm quite
enthralled with them. I've picked up some Burroughs B5092A's (From
what I can tell from one of their catalogs, a long-life
high-visibility one) for $4 a piece and am working on schematics for a
simple clock I want to build.

I guess my first major question is: Has anyone used KiCad to build
things with Nixies? If so, whats your experience? (good bad or
indifferent)

Second major question is /why is there a radioactivity symbol on
these?/ On all my little nixies there's a radioactive symbol next to
the name -- I can assume because they've got amounts of 85Kr in them
(according to the label on one).

Third, not so major question, is does anyone know of a source for
sockets? I dont want to have to solder new nixies every time one burns
out (though i have a hunch these wont given the power supply I'm going
to put them on).

And a little about me:

I'm a high school student in ABQ, dabble in hardware and software
(though my passion is applications, I love hardware stuff). I've been
soldering since I was 2, and am now better than my father (who
ironically is an embedded systems guy) except that I cant do surface
mount. I understand the basics of electronics and as long as I have
some sort of basis in reality I'm fairly good at figuring out what a
circuit does.

Welcome!

Eventually I hope to build a scope display clock and a totally thermionic clock, using tubes as counters and dividers with nixies as the display.? I shudder at the running costs of that one :)

Can your nixie supply do this ?

With a little too much time on my hands, I decided to connect a C9 Christmas light bulb to one of my nixie supplies:

The C9 lamp comes in 7W (120V, 60mA), or 10W (120V, 80mA) versions. This one is a 10W bulb. The supply clearly has dropped out of regulation. It normally outputs 180V. The voltage has dropped to 106V, and the current measured at 70mA (7.4W). The FET is only slightly warm, but the coil is somewhat warmer. This is a version of my MC34063 MK1.5 supply (currently on eBay). The lamp has been hooked up to it for hours.

I've done this in the past with a MAX1771 supply, that I hand wired on perfboard. That supply could still deliver 160V. I only kept the lamp on for a few minutes, because it would have burnt out quickly at that voltage.

I really do have cousins in North Carolina:

Now that he's older, he looks eerily like my father. His youngest kid (Michele) even has an engineering degree. Grandpa, my late uncle, would be proud, since he too, was an engineer.

But back to your problem. It could be instability, or simply the load demands are just more than your supply can deliver. Do you have any current measurements, on the HV side ? We could use those, before we really can be on any help. Also, you could test your supply with some "dummy" loads (read, lots of overheated resistors), to see how much power it can deliver.

Maybe you could still go ahead and do the library and I will send you a PCB for your trouble once they're milled.

I'm downloading Altium but 1.58GB will take an age on my connection. It's a 30-day 'make yoiur mind up' trial too.

I've used Nick de Smith's Soculator calculator to create the part pinout but haven't had time to bring it together with a symbol/description to complete the part. I'm heading to the South of France for Christmas so I think it might have to wait until I return.
That would be great Chris. If you would like me to do the part library we can make it official as there is no point in more than one person working on this. If you agree, let me know how we can go about this, should I upload the file here, send it to you? How can I PM someone here?

One final question, the pinout and dimensions of the IV-4 and IV-17, are they the same?

Regards,
Alex

Dont suppose you have a manual for it? Happy to pay all costs to get a copy.
I have one of these that needs a bit of attention-

- I'm picking a lot of the circuitry will be identical to what you
have.

Greetings. I have a treasure that I am unsure how to dispose of, and I want it to go to a collector who will treasure it. I was going to sell the tubes individually on Ebay but I was talked out of it.

135 volts is suspiciously like the forward voltage drop of a neon discharge... have you forgotten/shorted an anode resistor?

Now about my power supply for my alphanumeric display. Can you recommend a good alternative as I wish to avoid it totally? Unless it involves one of your hand drawn pencil schematics, in which case I think I'd be interested.
