It's not hard for me to get them, since I bought out the stock of Richardson a couple years ago. I have a couple thousand B5870L on hand.

They were made by the hundreds of thousands in the early 1970s for the nixie tube calculator market, whose bottom dropped out when the SR-10 came along in 1972. Whoever had stock on the shelf in 1973 kept them because they were too valuable to toss. Some of that stock survived 30 years in warehouses.

I'm designing a clock around the Neonixie 4 digit controller -- is this a wise choice or should I just go with something along the lines of an ATMega and an RTC? Is Neonixie.com a good place to get nixies as well?

Re: Dekatron Spinner PCB boards - blow out! - update!

Hello Dieter,

I am quite new in this matter, however I have don lotsof electronics inthe
past.
I have here two ETL GS12C tubes (Those with the solder lugs instead of a
base with pins) in combination with.
What I actually want to do with them is to make a devide by 60 counter.
A spinner is nice, but only 'for the show'.
The deviders have to be used in a clock (seconds and minutes), that will use
the two big meters as read out.
In the first instande I thought to make all with relay-dividers, but a
closer view showed that their life expectancy is too short for a minutes or
seconds counter. So I decided to do it with decatrons and/or neon triggeer
tubes.

May be your B12E spinner print is a good start to get some experience,
however I prefer to work behind a transformer instead of directly from the
230V mains supply. If you think it is usefull for me, you can reserve two
for me.

Do you have any information how to build ???60 counters with decatrons? All
suggestions and other information are highly appreciated (may also be done
in German).

Hello again, Giampaolo.
Decisions... decisions. I don't wanna miss on the fun of the Italian words, so I think I'll build a Penta in honor of my Italian roots AND a (an?) Hexa for Brazilian Portuguese words.

Can you explain a bit what I'd have to do in order to physically stick another 'digit' in that circuit, pending software?

Re: Velleman nixie clock kit --- any news ?

Martin Rimmer

Gents, these kts are currently available in the EU and UK.? The only issue as far as I know is the 'wall wart' power adaptor.? If anyone has an 'urgent' lust for one of thse little clocks I can get one for you from a UK reseller and mail it on but you will have to source the power adaptor locally Stateside.

Folks,

I've got word from Velleman on the nixie kits, they are being prepared
for the US market right now (manuals, packaging, etc..). The first batch
of kits should arrive in approx 2-3 months, and I've pre-ordered a small
batch of them.
Don't quote me, but price should be around $125. If anyone is
interested, email me back, depending on the response, I may setup a
pre-order list or something, and get a more solid price.

Here are links to some information on the kits. The plexiglass
case/panels look nice.

Re: Seeking help with JAN 902 for scope clock

"shishlakji"

Bad idea, until some adventurous person proves otherwise by making one. I made a scope clock using the Russian 3LO1 tube and found the phosphor lifetime is measured in DAYS. It took considerably less than 100 days (more like six weeks) for the brightness to fade to practically nothing in the frequently-written parts of the screen near the center, leaving just the tips of the hands showing. I replaced the tube and the second one went just as fast. They're garbage.

Scope Clock Tubes

I like the 3DP1; nice size and deflelction sensitivity, and that 5th deflection plate pin in the center of the front glass can sure be a conversation starter.? I picked up quite a few of these a while back and they work great.????? John

Like my 4 year old nephew says... "Hey, I have a great idea..." for us to put our sleeping nixie tubes to work.

Why don't we (that's 'you engineers' - lol) build a Christmas ornament with nixie tubes? I envision a medium-sized board to hang on the wall, with dozens, perhaps hundreds of tubes happily blinking in random order. Or a string of nixies for the window.

Some sort of blinking speed control would be bliss.

Wat'cha think?

Huge pile of tested numitrons available for clocks, plus some free!

"wshawlee2"

For those that like the numitron look, we just bought and tested a huge pile of Apollo DA2100 and 2110 compact numitron tubes. these are all good pulls, and they will fit either a 10 pin round IC socket, or can be soldered directly, and easily driven by a 7447 IC. We also have lots of new DR2000 and DR2010 full sized tubes, but these are not so cheap (we support many nuclear power station instrumentation sites and industrial scales with these), and so not ideal for clocks. BUT, ead on for more useful info on these too.

you can see them all here at Sphere Research:

also, we have a big bag of DA2100/DA2110 tubes with one segment bad, happy to add some FREE (for hours decades, etc.) on request for list members, just ask for them with any order (not shown on the site). AND, we have a lot of older DR2000's, with slightly bowed segments, indicating longer use, we will sell them at the same price as the small tubes above, to list members ONLY for cheap clocks. these fit a regular 9 pin socket, and have full sized digits. they will still run for a long time, especially if you slightly reduce the voltage drive.

all the best for the new year to the nixie and numitron list fans from walter & susan at Sphere Research!

Excellent info. I'll drop this one then.

I actually got the 902 tube free in a estate giveaway.

have many of them if you need one.
Thanks! I may take you up on that later, when time and money permit.
