How to calibrate IF OFFSET (intermidiate frequency) in nanoVNA H4
3
I am learning about RF and antennas and I want to understand how do I figure out how much the IF offset is, in NanoVNA-H4. I could not find any article explaining how to check if the default IF OFFSET (12kHz) is accurate. I also do not understand why its called an offset, since from what I read, this is the frequency that the VNA downconverts and uses it for receive-measure purposes. So it should say "IF", not "IF OFFSET". After all if it was indeed an offset setting, it would be default to 0, not around 12kHz.

Hello everyone! I managed to brick my nanoVNA H (clone, as I've found later on this forum) and now it is showing a white screen. First of all, I should have read this forum before the purchase and buy the real thing, but the product looked legit at the first glance. Second, I should've made a copy of the initial firmware before I install the new one. But what is done is done and I'm looking forward for a posible solution. Do you know what firmware came with this thing in the first place, to help me roll back? Since it is a sofware problem I imagine it can be done, but the seller didn't provided his support. Thank you! There are some pictures with the front, back and inside the nanaVNA.

NanoVNA-H version 3.6.1_SM_ST - ZEETK?
2
I have NanoVNA-H version 3.6.1_SM_ST. I had 1.2.27 (20.02.2024) from the factory. During startup I had dashes, colored stripes on the screen. I downloaded new software from hugen79 in version 1.2.43. I chose the NanoVNA-H-ZK 2.8-inch NanoVNA-H using SJWCH5351 as signal source, machine label hardware version ZK or SM_ST ending because nan SM_ST. Did I do it right? MODE ZEETK generator system has now appeared. Should I stay on ZEETK or change to Si5351 or MS5351?

I got my first Nano VNA yesterday, a friend who used to live 10 miles away, now lives 1000 miles away bought it for me along with jumpers and adapters. Today I set up "presets" for 80, 40, 20, and 2 meters. I researched a bit and found out it could be a small SD card, all I had was some 64-gig and one 16-gig card, well the 64 failed but I did manage to format the 16 to fat32 and that just got finished can see this device is going to be very handy, and a bit of a challenge, but that is OK. I have always believed that learning is a lifelong experience, and if you stop learning you stop living. As I try to learn more about this thing, I am sure I will be visiting this page frequently.

Smith Chart accuracy - what am I missing ?
9
Hi, I am trying to get to grips why I am not getting the same Smith Chart results with my NanoVNA as I am with my DG8SAQ VNA. I have got to the stage of trying to make everything as simple as possible. I am using the same connectors, cables and calibration standards. To make things even simpler I am just using a quality HV mica capacitor which measures 442 pf. According to Pasan software this should be 0 -j50 ohms at 7.2MHz. When I use the DG8SAQ VNA I get milli ohms -j46 ohms, which to me is close enough. Using the NanoVNA with an identical setup I get 11 ohms -j49 ohms. Which is pretty useless. What is going on ? Hi, i am trying to get a grip on using the nanoVNA. Does anybody have the 433 MHz antenna + base from the RTL-SDR kit ? Firstly calibrated at device port (no cable), then measured the loaded monopole through its magnetic antenna base at 433 MHz (first picture, antenna is on the left): Nooelec - Nooelec NESDR SMArt v5 Bundle - HF/VHF/UHF (100kHz-1.75GHz) RTL-SDR Kit with 3 Antennas. how good is a rain gutter antenna

* RAIN GUTTER ANTENNA on upper HF bands* * * *I've been experimenting with a variety of HF antennas here at my new QTH at Crosslands Retirement Community in Kennett Square, PA. * *I have some space limitations, but live on the first floor of a two-story apartment building.* *Lots of RFI from everywhere inside the building - S9 on 80m and 40m, less noise on 20 and 10m. * * * *I have a 140 ft end-fed wire with a 49:1 UNUN which tunes up easily on 80/40/20m and not so well on 17m/15m/10m.* *This end-fed is horizontal, low to the ground (winds among trees) and is good for high-angle NVIS radiation on 80/40m.* *I use it on the PA NBEMS net (3583 kHz) and on the Mid-Atlantic NBEMS net (7068 kHz) * * * * * *I'd like to get up something with a _low-angle_ signal for DX on 20/17/10m bands. * *But can I keep any HF antenna "hidden"?* * * *What I am now trying is the aluminum _rain gutter_ for our building, vertical for about 20 ft, makes a right angle turn and runs horizontally for about 20 ft.* *The coax attaches at the base of the gutter, near ground, to a 9:1 UNUN with a sheet metal screw into the gutter for a decent electrical connection. * * * *So overall, about 40 ft of thick (painted) aluminum gutter radiating element - in the shape of an inverted L and not resonant on any ham band.* *Lowest SWR around 16 MHz. It looks like it might work out on the 30m band as well (10.1 MHz). * *I have a Palomar Engineering (500W rating) 9:1 UNUN on 50 ft RG8X coax into the shack (closet).* *I have one counterpoise wire about 20 ft long attached to the UNUN ground terminal.* *Then a good manual tuner in the shack to an HF rig for very low SWR on any band. * * * *Here is what I see on my Nano VNA from 10 - 30 MHz: not bad SWR (under 2.5:1) in the shack on 20/17/15/10 meters.* *I'll give it a try over the next few weeks and see if the local noise is more/less on these bands, compared to my 140 ft end-fed.* * * *I'm often running QRP on these bands, CW and digi modes only. * * * *de k3eui barry*

Sysjoint SV4401A nanoVNA
10
So i bought one of these on Amazon (SV4401A). They're $150 less on Ali Express, but i don't entirely trust Ali Express -- i've been burned twice by them. The last "burn" was $24 worth of fake coax. Not worth returning. Anyway, this SV4401A is great and does what it's supposed to do. BUT there are spelling errors on the main screen, unbelievable. On the main screen, bottom right, there is a 'button' labelled RUNING instead of RUNNING. There was another typo as well, but i can't find it at the moment. I guess that can be fixed with a firmware update. Best 73 Orrin WN1Z

Nano H4 unable to connect via USB to Linux machine for VNASaver.
3
I have tried searching the group.io archive and got nowhere. Hopefully this is a new problem, and I didn't just miss it. I flashed this H4 just over 2 years ago (Feb 2023) to version 1.2.19 using this same hardware but a then-current version of Debian Linux. Now I'm using a newer Debian version (Bookworm), and cannot connect to the Nano in any mode, scanning or DFU. "new full-speed USB device number XX using xhci_hcd" "Device not responding to setup address." "device not accepting address XX, error -71" "XX" increments at every attempt to connect. The only difference I can find in my notes from 2 years ago is the kernel module is no longer "uhci_hcd," and is instead "xhci_hcd." Has the Linux community "upgraded" me beyond the ability to flash this thing? Am I needing to get the serial port dongle and some grabber clip leads?

Apologies if flogging a dead horse! CAL Correction?
23
I've only just found and joined this group and am using a donated VNA for the first time. So I apologise if I am repeating a topic that is hidden deep within the history of this group. In the CAL menu there is a Correction option but I cannot find any mention or explanation of it despite Google being my friend, and it is not covered in G4WNC's book, "NanoVNAs Explained". What is the purpose of the CAL Correction option and what effect does it have on the VNA? TIA ES 73 DE G4SDW Gareth

NanoVNA saver cannot connect to NanoVNA vis com port error
Well NanoVNA Saver 0.6.5 used to connect to com port on Win 10 and now it does not. I start the nanovna software, turn on the NanoVNA and when I click Rescan the software crashes off. If I turn on the NanoVNA first and then start the software I get Failed to execute nanosaver could not open Com 5. When I check Device Manager com ports I see Com port 5 and the yellow triangle. I deleted the com port and plugged the C cable from the NanoVNA-H into the pc and the com port 5 reappeared with the yellow triangle. So I downloaded Nanosaver 0.7.3 and with NanoVNA turn on then start nanosaver 0.7.3 I get the com port 5 error. If I start nanosaver first and then turn on NanoVNA-H I click rescan and nothing happens. The yellow triangle on the STMicroelectronics Virtual COM Port (COM 5) is causing nanosaver not to connect to pc. I have downloaded latest nanovna saver driver and when I try to update Win says I have the latest driver. I am stuck as NanoVNA saver used to work, any ideas how to remove yellow triangle from Com Port 5 I think that's my issue or I am missing something else. Mick N3OJP

NanoVNA F V2 not working correctly
5
I have 2 VNAs . H4 and New F v2. Using the H4 to measure coax length I get a reading that's spot on. But when I use the F V2 the reading is like 60% or more / greater than it should be. H4 at marker reading at top right on the screen 16.01 meters for a 52 ft RG-8X coax. But the F v2 shows for the same coax 1034. m, I know the V2 is different in the menu layout than the H4 and I dont have a menu for the V2. There is something wrong that I'm doing or the F2 VNA is bad. Cliff W4CBH

High impedance measurement with VNA?
9
Hi, Currently trying to design and tune a 1/2 end fed antenna (RF is applied on one end), I am looking for the correct method to measure its impedance. As this one is very high I don't know the right m¨¦thode ! The result of this measurement should allow me to create a Stub with SimNEC to tune it. Thanks in advance for your help -- 73 s Christian F8GHE

My NanoVNA-H4 is bricked. Is there a manual internal switch to reset?
3
Mine is not seen by Win 10 device manager. ( tried 2 cables and machines) I heard there is a way to get it out of DFU mode internally? Mine did not die updating firmware, but it was hooked up to PC using "saver" program I think. I installed the dfu se demo and file manager, but it's useless since PC can't see the device

testing non-50 ohm filters was Re: [nanovna-users] NanoVNA port renormalization
34
Since most filters are a series of resonators of some kind or another, terminating them in a resistance other than the design resistance will probably change the filter characteristics. Consider a filter that effectively has an input that is a RLC circuit, where the R is the terminating impedance of the source. If you change R from, say, 300 ohms to 50 ohms, then the Q will be different. That will certainly change the skirts, and will also probably change the overall passband (since most filters are stacked up responses of multiple resonances).

Adapting the LiteVNA for SAR?
6
Folks, Using the NanoVNA as a signal source for Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) was discussed a couple of years ago. Today on Hacker News, there is an article about a home-built Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) unit using a freq around 6GHz. https://hforsten.com/homemade-polarimetric-synthetic-aperture-radar-drone.html The article discusses theory and the problem of finding a suitable Rcv A/D. The LiteVNA has the freq range, is capable of resolving nS time (to a certain amount), can measure phase and is programmable. The big issue is probably the switching time of the generator/reflection ICs in the front-end of the LiteVNA. As for the A/D spec, would the heterodyne method and DSP used be a limiting factor? So - might it be feasible to make use of the LiteVNA in a simplified radar setup using an external controller and appropriate antennas? Could the TDR routines be adapted? Could the LiteVNA be used with a TinSA-Ultra and a controller for something? Just thinking out of the box here. In my 60+ years of Tech, I have always looked at repurposing stuff. So, instead of "not possible" answers, I would rather hear what might need to be changed (electronics /software) to achieve a minimal proof of concept. Thinking caps on.... ... Larry

Starting trouble for NanoVNA!
6
I am a new NanoVNA user. Mine is an H v3.6. No firmware updates have been done. I have been using it only for a few days. Sometimes, on sliding the switch on, the screen is blank, but the blue LED is lit. After a few on/off cycles, the screen becomes functional and I can use it. Does any of you have a similar problem?
