edy555 release 0.7.0-20200223
#firmware
As announced earlier by Gyula Molnar, edy555 released his latest NanoVNA firmware, version 0.7.0-20200223. edy555 wrote the original NanoVNA firmware and stays actively involved in its improvement. It's always interesting to see what new features he has introduced.
I keep a spare original hugen NanoVNA around to try out new firmware releases before trusting them on my primary NanoVNA-H. The edy555 0.7.0 release is located at . It's inside the nanovna-firmware-0.7.0.zip archive. Unlike most other developer's edy555 does not include a .dfu binary in his releases. Seasoned users know that you have to convert the hex binary in the archive to dfu format to flash it to the NanoVNA on Windows. It's an extra step that discourages some new users. I put my NanoVNA in the DFU mode (see Wiki section), flashed the firmware to my NanoVNA and cycled power. The NanoVNA powered back up with version 0.7.0 and I connected it to a terminal program and sent a clearconfig 1234 command. Sending the clearconfig command can save you a lot of unnecessary grief after a firmware upgrade. It clears out any leftover data from your previous firmware that can cause all sorts of strange symptoms and gnashing of the teeth. You'll lose all your previous saved locations, including save 0, and have to perform a complete OSLT calibration, but the extra time spent is well worth it. edy555's previous firmware releases added a lot of new marker functionality. Most of his marker functions have been merged into other firmware branches, including the recent NanoVNA-F firmware release. Instead of adding new hardware features, the 0.7.0 release consolidates and cleans up code, and improves some user interface features. From edy555's twitter feed: Just released #NanoVNA firmware 0.7.0 * Merged great contribution from DiSlord * Font becomes smart and clear * Saved flash size near 10kB. That's incredible!! * Replace the selection scheme of lever operation * many minor fixes A screenshot of the new user interface elements is attached. Notable changes are as follow: 1. font faces have a variable width. 2. trace colors selected for better contrast. (active values are white on black and differ in color from scaling values) 3. updated battery indicator (also, if a sensing diode is not installed an icon is not displayed). 4. different marker icon 5. active trace indicated by marker instead of highlighting channel number. 6. number formatting scheme improved. Some console commands were removed including the info command. The info command is used by some software to identify which device (NanoVNA, NanoVNA-H, NanoVNA-F, etc) is attached. NanoVNA-saver sends the following error message at startup, "2020-02-23 18:16:20,117 - NanoVNASaver.Hardware - WARNING - Did not recognize NanoVNA type from firmware." but continues to operate without any noticeable error. With the additional flash saving, I hope edy555 will be able to introduce some form of trace averaging in future releases. My opinion is that it is the continued support of developers such has edy555 and hugen that has propelled the sales of the NanoVNA. Each additional improvement adds value to your original purchase. - Herb |

Lots of noticeable improvements here - everything feels smoother and looks cleaner in general. ======================================== Thanks for the additional info Gus. I didn't notice the new marker display. I actually prefer it over marker the delta mode. The sweep refresh does feel a little faster in this revision, but It's just a subjective evaluation. edy555 is evaluating a method of sweeping and drawing the display in parallel that could definitely speed things up, but he's concerned it would negatively impact power supply regulation. - Herb |
This is edy555's firmware, not hugen's.

In any case, I converted it to DFU and attached to this reply. Regards, Larry On Monday, February 24, 2020, 12:17:57 p.m. GMT-5, Pablo E. Untroib <pablou@...> wrote:
Hi Hugen, do you have the converted file of this release, I own one of your devices purchased from your store, rel 3.4 |
All NanoVNA version 1 devices including the H (Not the H4 and not the F) can take the same firmware between them as developed by Hugen, edy555, QRP, reald and a couple of other devs I can't think of right now.

Thanks a ton! Its my understanding that it can be flashed to hugens as it is, am I right? |

will these firmware also extends the frequency range of the nanovna-h? Your hardcopy shows start frequency 1.5 ghz and stop frequency 1.9 ghz (?) best regards Chris --- 'Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.' -- Albert Einstein Am 24.02.2020 um 16:44 schrieb Gus Osborne: Lots of noticeable improvements here - everything feels smoother and looks more clean in general. |
Actually, I almost started a topic about the max frequency a few weeks ago, as I¡¯ve never seen anyone else mention it.
Starting with 0.6.0, both of my nanos will cover up to 2.7Ghz. I find that past about 2Ghz, it¡¯s pretty useless- but for tuning the GOES satellite gear (centered @1688Mhz), it¡¯s just good enough! |
Be sure you have an original Hugen v3.4 (or updated HW) when trying anything above 1.5GHz
Anything older/worse will only show a lot of noise above 1.5GHz And don't complain if it does not work well. You already got a LOT of functionality for the meager amount of money you paid. -- NanoVNA Wiki: /g/nanovna-users/wiki/home NanoVNA Files: /g/nanovna-users/files Erik, PD0EK |
Recently I received a nanoVNA H. It has firmware version 0.4.5-1-gfrbbceca. Build Time: Dc 26 2019 - 19:32:31.
It works ok so far, but I want to know where I can find this firmware in order to have a B/U copy.? I want to install the recently edy555 release 0.7.0-20200223 and while I suppose that it will work without problems, it is a good thing to have a B/U of the current firmware. TIA, Ignacio, EB4APL |
The forum Wiki and files sections are full of the info you're looking for.Check out the various user manuals while you're there and read up on how to use the DefuSe utilities.

Thank you, but my question was about where to find my current version (0.4.5-1-gfrbbceca), I suppose it is not possible to extract it from the micro. Ignacio, EB4APL El 25/02/2020 a las 18:25, Larry Rothman escribi¨®:

The original user guide that I maintain in the forum's files section has ALL the info you will need on where to find the firmware on github.

Read up on how to use the DeFuSe utilities and you will learn how to dump your current FW. Look on github under edy555 for the FW On Tuesday, February 25, 2020, 12:35:25 p.m. GMT-5, EB4APL <eb4apl@...> wrote:

Thank you. I thought that it was not possible to dump the current firmware. Most micro manufacturers do not allow it as a security means to avoid copying the FW that is inside. Thanks a lot. Ignacio, EB4APL El 25/02/2020 a las 19:06, Larry Rothman escribi¨®:

Well, remember this is all open-source but since all the various firmware versions are freely available, there is really no reason to perform a dump from your device.
