There is no theories, this is well known bug of NanoVNA firmware. The latest firmware version has significantly improved, so these errors happens not so often, but it is still possible.

No, there is no way for PC to check if sweep is paused. yes, the user may want to download paused data. If you send resume, it will overwrite user data and it will be lost.

The only issue with pausing the device is the power switch.? Both of my Nano's (a white and a black) reset if the power switch is wiggled slightly.? You can mitigate that by shorting the switch
