Re: Measuring A Cap

It's best to measure the capacitor at the frequency of interest, especially
as that frequency increases. For a "sticker value", use a low frequency -
1 MHz or less. As the frequency increases, parasitic inductance becomes
more and more evident which cancels some of the effective capacitance.

Re: Getting return loss #programming

If you're new to the Nanovna, please read the beginners guide in the files section. There are other reference guides there too.?
I wrote a? console command guide that explains all the serial (usb) command structures. It has not been updated in 2 years but covers most commands. It has been used by a number of developers to create apps that interface with the Nanovna.?
The version 2 and newer Nanovnas use a binary command structure. I do not think there is a document for them yet so you will have to go through the open-source firmware to see those.?

Not really - there's two aspects to this:

1) Different characteristic impedance - You could calibrate with 300 ohm load, short, and open and directly measure 300 ohm lines (or 75 ohm lines, etc.)? The S parameters will be correct, but anything which turns that into Z won't necessarily be right (because the formula needs the calibration impedance.
- Or, you can mathematically transform measurements made assuming 50 ohms into measurements using some other impedance. The NanoVNA won't do this, but other software can.

2) Balanced to unbalanced transformation - This is more about "how accurate do you want to be?" The NanoVNA is a unbalanced system, but it's also tiny. It's also (in usual situations) not "connected to ground" so the unbalance shouldn't affect much (i.e. it's a two terminal device, the balanced transmission line is a two terminal device, there's no way to "know" that it's not balanced)

My slide rule is a version made by Collins Radio Company that I picked up at a hamfest maybe 20 years before I went to work for them.

Bob,
as Larry wrote, please use the mouse buttons on the graphical interface when using the NanoVNA App.
This will give you more setting options. Unfortunately, you can't read much more on my website either,
because the creator of the program created it for your own use and shared it in its current state to display NanoVNA and
even more VNAs on your computer.

Zahid,
There have been many messages regarding return loo in the forum.?
You should be able to use the search function and search for "return loss" and you will find a lot of info that has been covered.?
If you go to the forum Wiki (link at the end of each email) refer to the very first item regarding searching.?

Ok, try this...
Put the unit into dfu mode (hold in jog SW and turn on with usb cable connected) and see if the computer sees it's in dfu.?
On the H4, the LCD is dark during dfu mode.?If the PC recognizes it in dfu mode, push in new fw.?

My whole intent was to import S parameter files into SimSmith - I've been using it for years. I have a small collection of both S1P files and CSV files I exported from my one port analyzer (AIM4170) and little things I've done with it.

I just downloaded a more recent version of SimSmith, but in my rush to learn the NanoVNA didn't think of that road, just getting back to where I am now.

H will callibrate okay(?) but won't plot anything #nanovna-h #problem

Have been using my nanoVNA-H to tune my antennas for the lower bands in ham radio for over a year. It has been a lifesaver! I started to use it recently and it seemed to complete the calibration procedure successfully. I saved the calibration and then connected the antenna to be tested. There was no sweep just one small dot at the lower lefthand point of the screen. Has my unit died or have I inadvertently changed some setting deep in a menu somewhere? I tried pausing and unpausing the sweep but that made no difference. Has anybody experienced anything like this with their unit? Thanks, Stephen KO4CVU

one-port antenna analyzer that I can compare its measurements to and
everything seems close enough to be confident with it.

My question concerns PC software with it. I downloaded NanoVNA App after
reading the Wiki, but since it doesn't have any documentation, can't find
out ways to do things I'd like to do. I don't think it's possible with
this, so any pointers are appreciated. Including if any other piece of
software does these things better.

Simplest one first, I'd like to save the plots to S-parameter files. Is
that possible?

Is it possible to change the displays from Log Mag to magnitude and angle
or R and jX?

On NanoVNA app, I see how to push the VNA settings onto the app, but I
don't see how to push the app's settings onto the VNA. Is that possible?

Thanks,
