Re: NanoVNA-App in app calibration problem (bug?) #calibration #nanovna-app

Hello Roger,
Just an observation, The green App curves have a distinct spike at the 5351 clock gen harmonic change points; ~300MHz, ~600MHz, 900Mhz.

I know of one young lady who used to do that with extension cords, until the time she did it and the cord came away, leaving the plug in the socket and enough wire sticking out to generate quite the light show. I don't think she did it again after that.. :-)

The MS chip is not a clone. It is or was used in place of the SI chip due to unavailability of the SI chip.
Check the back of your NanoVNA.
If there is a MS at the end of the serial number, then use the MS version. If not use the SI version.
This has been addressed before.

During the pandemic there was a shortage of si5351 clock chips and Hugen (and some cloners) used a Chinese clone of this chip with a MS prefix. In some ways this chip was better but it had different characteristics so there is a software selectable option to select which chip is installed. The SI version defaults to original chip and MS version to the Chinese clone. But in either version you can change it in the menu.

Your NanoVNA-H Version: 0.4.4-1-g42 is very old and was released in 2019 so you have the SI chip.

Re: upgrade firmware

As I said prior, there is no code difference, and either version will run. The issue is that the differences in the two chips will cause some off results if the wrong one is selected. If rhings ever seems goofy, change the setting and see if things improve (you do *NOT* need to reload!).

Re: upgrade firmware

Based on what the code authors have stated, the two builds are identical with the exception of an advanced mode setting determining wich chip you have. To that end, you can load either and simply change to the correct setting. On many units, mthe de ices with the later MS chip will have an "M" in either the model or serial on the unit label (I forget which), but not all do this,

Re: check "Dollar Tree" store. Now Dollar and a Quarter!

I'll gently argue tuis point! The "value" regarding price is never just what you paid, but the overall cost of use. If I buy a very good set of headphones for $100, and they last 10 years (not atypical in my experience), that's a cost of $10 per year. If I buy cheapies for $1.00, but only get a week out of them, that's $52 per year. Which one is the better value in the long run again? Within reason, buying a quality product (within reason) is rarely a bad decision and the cheap offshore junk often is . . . Obviously there is an occasional exception, but buyer beware!
