I respectfully disagree with you. The Port Z feature in the latest DiSlord software only does the mathematical calculations necessary to convert the measurements to a different system impedance (like 600 ohms instead of 50)

It does NOT change the actual load impedance on the filter itself. The filter characteristics will change if you do not use the actual source and load impedance that the filter was designed for. For example take an IF filter that was designed for a 1000 ohm in/out impedance. If you put 50 ohms on the output the rolloff characteristics will be much worse than at 1000 ohms and no mathematical calculations in the NanoVNA will compensate for that.

Re: 2 poles filters teminaison impedance

Gerard,
1) The DisLord firmware should work on most any NanoVNA, clone or not.
2) I don't know if the PORT-Z feature works via NanoVNASaver.
3) 3-leged filters should work with the PORT-Z method. Remember to do a SOLT calibration first.

Finally, I watched two videos on YouTube.

One tests quartz (2 legs), the other a house filter made of several quartz.
3)My question is, will it work with a 2-cup (3-legged) filter?

Thanks for the tip. I got a new display and now the screen capture works. The old display has the version 1.0 and the new display has the version 1.1.

Re: 2 poles filters teminaison impedance

Gerard,
The latest DisLord firmware for the NanoVNA does allow you to see what the filter response would be with a load impedance different than 50 ohms.

First perform an SOLT (short, open, load, through) calibration right at your filter test point. Then connect the filter: You should see a somewhat distorted band-pass response at the nominal filter center frequency (use a span about 4 times the nominal filter width).

Then use the PORT-Z setting in the DISPLAY menu. Set it to something like 500 ohms and see if the filter response looks flatter in the pass band. Adjust the PORT-Z setting until you get the flattest response.

You can try adding a small capacitor (a few pF) to ground to see if it improves things.

Once you get an approximate value for the filter design impedance, you can design some simple L-match sections to measure the response more accurately. Some iteration may be required.

Why don't you go back to an earlier version. What does not work is to use a recent version on an old OS. I don't think it affects the drivers (what do the experts say?). Personally I went from 0.3.8 which worked under Seven to 0.3.10 which did not work under Seven. But a nice OM gave me, here, a recompilation of 0.3.10-Win7 for Seven.

Re: #nanovna-saver I'm stuck #nanovna-saver

The first thing I would try is to use a new USB cable. They do wear out.
And Saver, as good as it is, does not do very good error checking on
returned data from the nano - it wxpects it to be well-behaved, so if a bad
cable causes data issues, it can crash saver.

I just downloaded SAVER 0.5.2 and it is working fine with my Win10 (10 yr
old) desktop.

I do not see a whole lot of changes compared to earlier SAVER versions in
terms of measuring common antenna characteristics via the S11.

I just gave a talk on Nano VNA to a county ARES group (near Philly) and it
was working fine on my setup.
I used it to show:
Reflection coefficient, Return Loss, SWR, Phase, R and X, Z, and of
course Smith Chart

Everything worked well with great graphs in bold colors.

It is SO much easier (for me) to use the Nano VNA (mine is 3 yr old now)
with SAVER software that to use it as a stand-alone instrument.

So perhaps there is something unique to your setup/config that is failing.

COM port issues?
Cable RFI?

0.5.2 is buggy. Wait for 0.5.3

I am testing fixes daily as the developers sort out the problems.

Re: Firmware Version?

According to information I found, the MS version will have a _M after the model number. Both my NanoVNA-H and NanoVNA-H4 do not have the _M after the model number so they are SI models. There is also a software switch on the NanoVNA that is confusing, but I have found that if the MS is visible, then you have selected the MS functionality. Same with the SI, which on both on mine are visible, then the SI functionality is selected. Like I said, very confusing. Why have a software switch for different functionality, AND, have two different software versions. Totally illogical. Have one or the other, preferably software, not a switch.

Loading the wrong software AND having the wrong switch selected will cause the Smith Chart data to jump around ir selecting a Stimulus start range above 100MHz. That will be the key to having the wrong software or settings.

Good luck

Several years old use SI version. MS version is for recent production units with MS on the back label.

It is practically impossible to brick these, even if you deleted the
bootloader there are programing headers on the board. It should
be explained in the community manual.
