I refer you to Norm Augustine's famous paper where he plotted cost of military systems (aircraft carriers, airplanes) on log scale and it was linear. And from that, he inferred that in 20xx ( I can't remember) that the US Dept of Defense would be able afford one airplane.
It shows up in the Augustine's Laws book, but the original article is in the journal Land Warfare.
