I'm sorry to say, Jeff, that at this point I have no idea what's going
wrong :-( It looks like you have the right thing installed, but I couldn't
tell you why it doesn't work.
I fully understand why you might call it a night - maybe someone will come
along with a better explanation of how to get started than what brief notes
I had. Python does seem to be quite a popular language for apps like this,
so something might crop up.
Best of luck,

Thanks, Rune.
Still no joy. In the hope that there's something obvious that I haven't
done, let me explain what I've done so far...
The ONLY way I get python to launch is by clicking on the installed
Windows python icon.
Typing "python", or "pip" in the cmd.exe window just gives me a message
that whatever I typed "is not recognized as an internal or external
command, operable program, or batch file."
Note that I am doing this when the command window is pointing at the
directory which contains "python-3.7.4.exe".
If I type "python-3.7.4" at the command prompt -- a new window opens
(Python 3.7.4 Modify Setup -- see attached screen capture).
Anyway, it is all very frustrating. If you don't recognize what I'm doing
wrong, no problem -- I'm about ready to call it quits. (One of the
drawbacks of being retired -- if I were still working this is when I'd put
a call into the IT department and have them take care of it).
