Each of the 12 members of my ham radio club, plus myself, received USB cables with our NanoVNA's and they all work fine for data transfer and charging. So I wouldn't generalize about all the USB cables shipped with the NanoVNA. I do agree that Paul may have received a defective USB cable and his first troubleshooting step should be to substitute a known working cable.
After that he needs to provide more info, because Linux and Windows 10 typically will detect the NanoVNA without requiring manual driver installation, but Windows XP and 7 need the serial port driver to be user installed.
