For my final tests this evening I put a programmable resistor board on the secondary of the 1 to 8 transformer and tried lots of different resistances to see if I could see what the matching resistance was but I could not get close to the center of the smith chart.

As a final test I again pulled out half the primary turn and tried again - this time I got a better match at 7.15MHz with a 3k ohm load. The VSWR is 1.23 to 1, the return loss is -20dB, the smith chart is a bit off at 61 ohms though.

So far it seems I can only get a good match with half the primary turn removed, if I have a full turn I can not get a match at all.
