There are several versions of H4 firmware.
You may have to flash an older or newer version. Make sure it's the H4 version and NOT the H version!!

I don't understand the problem you were having. I have a lit display, I just don't get the number pad coming up after selecting the start, center or stop frequency selections. I can't enter any numbers for those parameters easily without that number pad. Problem appears to be software related or I've accidentally done something in settings.

remove the cover plate from the screen and turn it on. If the problem is resolved, you will be helped by a plastic washer like me. see:
