As Ruth Buzzi use to say "Never Mind" USPS reverses course

NABRC February Meeting for Newer Hams - "Ditch the Ducky"
The next meeting of NABRC is Feb 10 at 7:00pm (fellowship 6:30pm) in the 6th floor classroom of Aiken Regional Medical Centers. New hams often start out with a simple HT with a rubber ducky antenna. They then wonder why they can't reach local repeaters. Many of us have "ditched the ducky" for better performing antennas. The topic for this month's meeting is to demonstrate alternative antennas available to improve performance. Please bring your antenna alternatives for a show & tell. -- Dave, WB5NHL Treasurer, NABRC

USPS has suspended parcels from Hong Kong and China
Be careful ordering any small items from China. For many years small items (<$800 value) came into the US via USPS "de minimis" except from taxes. Trump has suspended this exemption impacting Temu, Shein and Alliexpress. Bottomline, check where it's being shipped from you might be lucky if it's already warehoused in the US. Not sure how this will play out since USPS is unlikely able to collect import duties on the volume of small packages. https://apnews.com/article/usps-china-hongkong-shein-temu-b456d7b6d66780090bd5bef862dfda13 -- Dave, WB5NHL Treasurer, NABRC

All Electronics reincarnated
For those of us that remember the All Electronics (predating Amazon) surplus mail order business in California it looks like it has been resurrected as https://aretronics.com The major difficulty I see is the cost of shipping. They apply a flat $9.50 that makes it really difficult to compete with Amazon particularly for small parts. -- Dave, WB5NHL Treasurer, NABRC

GARSfest canceled
I apologize for the multiple emails about GARSfest. The venue owner has expressed concerns about opening the facility because of weather expectations. Therefore the Greenwood Amateur Radio Society has reluctantly canceled the event. There are no plans at this time to reschedule this year, but I will present it to the membership for consideration at our next meeting. Be safe. CSRA Ham Technician Prep Course Jan 4-5 2025
2
A 1.5-day HAM Technician class will be held on Saturday Jan 4 from 8am-5pm and finish up on Sunday Jan 5 from 12noon-3pm. Pizza will be provided on Saturday. The classes will be held in a residence in Graniteville, SC. About 4 miles west of Aiken SC. We have had a 100% pass rate in the past. A limited number of spaces are available. There is NO charge for the classes, or pizza. Please call or send an email that you are coming, and a contact number or email address. Phone 803-292-9559 or email kq4kkham@... or dave@... If we have a good turnout, it might be possible to have a VE team test on Sunday afternoon. During this Christmas break time, would be a great time to study to become a licensed HAM. Final prep for the test will be on Saturday and Sunday, January 4 and 5. Then on Thursday, JAN 9 ,2025 you will be well prepared to take the test at 7 PM, Aiken SDA Church, 1714 Columbia Hwy N. 29801. It’s on the corner of US-1 and Gun Range Rd on the north side of town. Another way to study is on the internet. There are a couple of sites you could use. HAMEXAM.ORG http://hamexam.org/ is a good one. You want to study Element 2: Technician You can use the Flash Cards to study, then practice taking Practice Exams. You can keep taking the exams. Each time you try, the exam recycles and uses mostly different questions. The Practice Exam questions are the SAME ones on the real exam. Each exam is 35 questions, multiple choice. You must get 26 correct to pass the test. Keep taking the practice exam till you can get 80-85% correct on EVERY exam. The better you do on the practice exam, the better you will do on the real one. Attending the class will give you the greatest chance to pass the FCC exam. A great printed study guide is Gordon West Technician Class 2022-2026 Element 2 Radio Technician Class Study Guide. They are about $29 on Amazon or HRO, but not required to attend the class. Any questions send an email to kq4kkham@... HAPPY LEARNING Kent KQ4KK .
