The list
I have been around from the very beginning. And yes topics periodically repeat themselves as new list members come on board. Sometimes the answers are all the same, but sometimes, there is a new way of doing something or a different point of view. I have picked up several new and better ways of weathering,as an example of a repeated thread. Personally, the amount of posts that I contribute to the list has decreased over the last year. I have become more selective in what topics I'm interested in and what topics I will reply to. I do use my delete button as needed. I rather delete a thread then add to the number of replies. As far as this list being moderated, thats nothing new. The fact that Bill wishes to view each post before it is fowarded to the general list population,is a noble attempt to keep non nscale topics off the list, and thus remove the temptation for us to comment on them in a negative way. Each of us can recall several threads that had very little to do with nscale, that refused to die even after Bill requested that we stop posting to that particular thread. If you send a post to the list that never reaches us,and you're sure that Bill had deleted it,you can always email him as to why, if you feel strongly about that topic. I know for a fact that Bill has always replied to my emails promptly,no matter what the topic was. Regards, Joel Willstein Canyon Creek District jaw101@... ICQ11070911

ADMIN: Open for messages
I'll have to ask all of you to remain patient for a while as I get things up and running. My schedule this week is quite full so all the FAQ stuff, web references, etc. will get changed as time permits. I'll try to post an editorial policy later, today, but it will basically be the same as the previous list. So, let's see how this list works. Nscale magazine
I have read all the stuff about Mr Hundman's editorial and his magazine. I have to say I like this publication. People complain about the lack of content, but most of the articles in the May/June issue seem rather useful to me. Maybe the whiners are super modelers or something, if this is the case, maybe they should try to publish an "N Scale Rail model Craftsman" or something. There was an article on improving the Atlas Signal tower, scratchbuilding an oil storage tank, improving the Walthers well car, the Alkem steel article, snow shed construction, what tools you should have, and the regular sections. I must say that this stuff is useful. If any of you have better information, start typing, this list is a great cheap way to begin your publishing career. I also counted the amount of pages that had editorial content versus the pages of pure advertising. If a page had any editorial material, I counted it as a page of editorial information. My results for the May/June 98 N-scale were: 49 editorial vs 84 total pages=58% pages had some information on them. June 98 Model Railroader 98 editorial/160 total pages=61% If you don't count the "Schedule" and "Classified" sections in MR, then the figure is 87/160=54%. I think N-Scale is a good magazine, and considering the small staff and limited focus, it beats alot of other hobby and special interest mags. As for the editorial, I am wasting my time right now writing this to defend this magazine. But I choose how to spend my time which is a right in the US Constitution "...pursuit of happiness..." and Mr Hundman has the right to write a page full of "the internet sucks" over and over. Sometimes the truth hurts...... Truth inflames guilt like a hot needle..... FR

digest mode
Ok, now that I have resubscribed to the "official" n scale mailing list on Onelist.com I have selected the "digest" mode from the User Info page. I know there was a posting from you Bill about there being no digest mode yet for the mailing list. Is the digest mode now active (and that is why it let me select it)? Hope so. I also hope that no division has been created because of the move to a commercial server. I strongly feel that this is in effect a "club" to which I belong. There are very few model railroaders (let alone n-scale modellers) in my area so this list is very important to me. I certainly don't want to see my "club" split up because of the list being on a commercial server. I also noticed that on almost every email I received from the old list, there was usually a signature of somekind with a "unsubscribe" or offer for free email from Juno or some other service. I won't even mention the "Free Ads" posted as signatures from every dealer who emailed the list. The simple question is this folks. What is really the difference between the ads on every email on the old list and the ads put on by Onelist? Not a thing in my opinion. Ads are ads and that is life as we will soon know it on the Internet. Lighten up my 2 cents worth Tom Durfee

Tortises & Peco Turnouts 5
Some time ago there were posts about using Tortises with Peco turnouts. I just want to share an experience the should serve as a warning. Because the Peco "snaps" into position, the wire that comes with the Tortise must be replaced with something of a heavier gauge to overcome the resistance of the turnout spring. I used an unfolded paper clip (1 size larger than normal size) and had good results with 1 exception. Seems that I didn't position the Tortise centered under the throwbar. It was slightly off center. At first this didn't cause a problem. After some time, with the wire exerting too much pressure in one direction, the turnout throwbar actually separated underneath one point. I haven't removed the turnout yet to see if it can be salvaged (it's a $45 double-slip). I doubt that super glue will hold up. Just thought I pass this on other list members. Lou Bubala NscaleLou@...

NMRA Question 4
I hope someone on the [new] list can help me. Several months ago I sent my membership to NMRA over the Net. However no response. I need to know how to contact them. The Web pages or Email apparently are not the answer. Frankly I admit I don't even know where they are headquartered. To the contrary the N_Trak response was immeadiate and informative. -- Norm Lampton Navajo Christian Services Norm-ncs@...

Tank for air brushing
I have a scuba tank in good condition - has anyone successfully used or adapted one of these for air brushing - and if so, how long did the air supply last and where did you locate the appropriate fittings. [N] NTRAK track guage
help in color number I have one of these that John made years ago. It's really handy. It makes the nasty task of fitting connecting tracks go much quicker. I've color coded each of the lengths on the guage and my box of connecting tracks. When its time to do the connecting tracks, I slide the guage in place, note the color and dig into the box of connecting tracks for the matching color and all you have to do is get the pesky rail joiners in place. I've been bugging John for years to make some more of the guages since various members of the clubs I belong to keep borrowing mine! I don't have any commercial ties with Aztec. Just think it's a neat tool for Ntrakkers == -------------- Roger Otto Mione Valley Railroad _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? What is this engine? 6
I am mounting MT couplers on an engine for someone but have never seen one of these beasts before. It is a "Center Cab" type switcher with three "B" type trucks. The center truck is not powered. It is custom painted for UP but I think it is a Japanese prototype. I can't find any information under the frame to see who made it. Does anyone know what this is? [N] Varying track elevation in yards 8
Tracklaying has finally reached the yard, and in an effort to avoid the Great Blue Plain (tm) effect, I want to vary the track-to-track elevation slightly. I was planning on using layers of cork to do this, but thought someone on the list might have a better solution. Please reply by email and I'll post a summary. Internet use
Come on Drew, you yourself have sung the praises of the internet helping the cause of model railroad growth. What about all the stuff you sell on the Ebay auction site. Several peoples model railroading empires are growing and some new ones started thanks to the internet. Several companies which cant afford advertising in all the model railroad magazines use the internet as a more affordable and more easily accessible form of advertising and getting the information out. The internet is useful to model railroading. Thanks Bob Williams RWilliams SANTRAK N-Scale in San Antonio,Tx

the compressor I got for $63 a model "BR-23" actually with the brand-name "Eagle" on the box, not Badger. nonetheless, it puts out 35 psi with no trouble. got all the plumbing assembled yesterday, finally, although I didn't test it afterwards (mom's day, busy weekend) the plumbing I actually ended up with: +------+ +-------+ +----------+ | comp |--->--->| T |---|reg+filter|--->--->airbrush +------+ +--+ +--+ +----------+ | | | | +--+ +--+ | tank | +-------+ of course, the various plumbing parts ended up being more than the drawing, I used several male<->male pipe pieces, an elbow, a Tee, two braided Badger hoses... but the compressor pumps up the tank nicely to 35 psi, the regulator/filter has a water-trap, which then has a tiny valve on the bottom to let water drain without dissassembling anything...I haven't investigated how to adjust the regulator for output pressure. in a test I made two weeks ago, just using the tank (filled at the gas station, not a good approach), I spent A LOT more time on cleanup than on painting. is this normal? cleanup time seemed rather lengthy. -- clint

Digest Number 1
Bill, suggest you remind everyone that there is a "Digest" version that is available for the list. Your earlier admin message had encouraged us listoids to, in turn, encourage ONEList to provide one. They do and it saves a lot of mailbox clutter. Thanks again, Bill, for all your efforts in keeping the list going. John Benny Shoreline, Washington
