MTL True Scale Couplers?

Anyone convert their collection to the "MTL True Scale Couplers"?
Was it hard?
Was it worth it?

I have about a dozen cars I run with them. They look great, and don’t have and slinky effect,?but aren’t ideal for ops. They don’t couple without a pretty good amount of force. The cars I use them on stay together, and they do a great job of that. Because they are smaller, the vertical range is smaller, so your track work needs to be good.?The other downside is that they aren’t compatible with any other coupler (yet). I’d hold out for the N-Possible coupler and see if that’s a good fit for you. I did test those out about a year ago and they operated nicely (no slinky).

I tried them out. It wasn't difficult to convert cars, the coupler box is the same approximate size as the standard 1015 couplers so they install the same way. The biggest issue I had with them was the gather is so short they tended to uncouple over rough track work. That probably says more about my track work than it does about the couplers. But, because of the smaller gather, it is critical that the coupler height be uniform.

The "air hose" on the True Scale couplers is there for looks only, they serve no functional purpose. They are stiffer than the standard couplers, so it usually takes a hands-on approach to get them to couple. Unlike the standard coupler, there is no uncoupling lever so there is no automatic uncoupling. Because they are smaller, it is more difficult to get an uncoupling device between the cars, a T pin worked best for me. Due to the difficulties in coupling and uncoupling, along with no automatic uncoupling, they aren't easy to use for switching operations.

The thing I liked best about the True Scale couplers was they totally eliminate the slinky effect found on the standard couplers. If MT was smart about it, they would redesign their standard line to be more like the True Scale for this reason. The thing I liked least about them is they will not couple with any other coupler, not even Z scale.

TSG Media has a review of them on their YouTube channel:

My review is here:

For my purposes, I decided they weren't worth converting my entire fleet, so I took them back off and re-installed the standard couplers.

I have converted a number of my MTL Runner Packs. It is not difficult if you have already converted the cars to body mount couplers (1027's). A bit more work if you haven't. I convert all of the couplers in the Runner Packs to True Scale Couplers except for 2 cars. On these I have True Scale on one end and 1027's on the other. The 1027's are at each end of the runner Pack.

The Runner Packs do look better with True Scale couplers but beware. They are not so good on longer cars. They have limited sideways movement so tend to derail the cars unless your track radius is quite large. I have 15" radius curves, and 50" cars can be an issue.

Is it worth? Not an easy question to answer. I have a number of Runner Packs, one with 16 Reefers. The True Scales look really nice on these packs. I will probably convert all of my Runner Packs as I will normally run them together. I doubt I will convert all of my cars to True Scale although I have already converted all of them to body mounts (1027's). If I get to the stage where I have nothing else to do, I might think about.

I hope this is helpful...............George.? ?

I use True Scale couplers on the pilots of steam engines, they look better and will couple with normal MT couplers if I need to double head.

They do look better, but they will not couple with either normal N or Nn3/Z couplers. I usually use Nn3/Z scale couplers for steam engine pilots.
