I tried them out. It wasn't difficult to convert cars, the coupler box is the same approximate size as the standard 1015 couplers so they install the same way. The biggest issue I had with them was the gather is so short they tended to uncouple over rough track
work. That probably says more about my track work than it does about the couplers. But, because of the smaller gather, it is critical that the coupler height be uniform.
The "air hose" on the True Scale couplers is there for looks only, they serve no functional purpose. They are stiffer than the standard couplers, so it usually takes a hands-on approach to get them to couple. Unlike the standard coupler, there is no uncoupling
lever so there is no automatic uncoupling. Because they are smaller, it is more difficult to get an uncoupling device between the cars, a T pin worked best for me. Due to the difficulties in coupling and uncoupling, along with no automatic uncoupling, they
aren't easy to use for switching operations.
The thing I liked best about the True Scale couplers was they totally eliminate the slinky effect found on the standard couplers. If MT was smart about it, they would redesign their standard line to be more like the True Scale for this reason. The thing I liked
least about them is they will not couple with any other coupler, not even Z scale.
TSG Media has a review of them on their YouTube channel:
My review is here:
For my purposes, I decided they weren't worth converting my entire fleet, so I took them back off and re-installed the standard couplers.

Anyone convert their collection to the "MTL True Scale Couplers"?
Was it hard?
Was it worth it?
?
