Ad Blocker for Safari on iPhone
Good morning, Does anyone use any ad blocking software for Safari on the iPhone? I've seen a few (AdGuard, Wipr, AdBlock) and wanted to hear from someone with some "real world" experience with them to see what you use and how you like them. Thanks! Beth

Looking for a used iPhone - not too old
My older brother, 86, who lives in Connecticut, is in a nursing home/rehab facility. He will probably be there the rest of his life. He gets dialysis three times a week and is currently applying for medicaid. For the second time in 3 months he has lost his fairly new iPhone. He found it the first time but we have been searching for six weeks and have been unable to locate it. We contacted the dialysis center, the transportation company, the nursing home and the hospital where he is now - in a state of delirium due to who knows what - he clawed at his dialysis port and developed sepsis. He seems to be doing okay now and will be returning to the nursing home in a day or two. Anyway we are looking for used cell phone to send to him. We plan to get a lanyard for it so he can keep it around his neck 24/7. If any of you have an older unlocked iphone (or Verizon) you are not using and are willing to sell it to us reasonably it will be greatly appreciated. He just needs to be able to make/receive calls, texts and maybe do email so it doesn¡¯t have to be sophisticated - just a decent battery and the ability to be wiped clean so I can reset it for him. (A friend recently got a new iPhone and gave us her old iPhone 6s (11-12 years old). However she doesn¡¯t know her iCloud password so we can¡¯t wipe the phone - we can¡¯t even update the OS because it requires a connection to a computer with iTunes! Thanks to everyone on this list for all you do. Harry

Apple Mail and rules
3
Hi all, I have a question about Apple Mail and rules and devices. Suppose I have two devices. Problem 1: If my rules are on device 1, but I open device 2, then the rules do not get applied. Problem 2: There does not appear to be any way to sync rules across devices Solution: I put them directly on my iCloud account (via the web interface), so they will get applied no matter what device I use. This works well enough that I now have somewhere between 100 and 200 rules. Downside: The web interface for the rules is so weak, it resembles Coors Light. There is no way to search for a rule. There is no way to sort rules. Sorting rules by hand is slooooow, and seems to not stick, unless you want to move one rule per day, and then wait for the order to become fixed. (I once tried sorting rules by hand, but the time it takes to stick is long enough that I ended up with a mess.) Question: Does anyone know a quicker or better way to work with iCloud's rules (other than forwarding all their email to another server and applying rules there)? Thanks, Bill

Scanning slides
5
I am scanning slides with my new (to me) Epson V600 photo scanner. It¡¯s doing a great job. But it does something I don¡¯t understand. It scans the slide twice - 1st time is normal but the second is a blank white but the image of the side is barely visible - It¡¯s almost like a translucent white mask over the slide. Yet when I save the slide the white isn¡¯t visible at all - there is only one image not two. Can anyone explain what¡¯s going on - cause this method takes twice as long!! BTW I am using the lastest version of VueScan to do the scanning.

Scanning slides
I ran an update on the Epson Scan software and now it sees the V600 - thanks.

Epson Scan 2
Lee, I checked my app. I always use the professional option. My number of samples was set to 1 - so I don¡¯t know why the second pass. I¡¯m going to set it to 2 and see if that makes a difference. I¡¯ll get back to you. Harry

Epson Scan 2
2
I thought I would give Epson Scan 2 a shot at scanning slides on the Epson V600 scanner but it doesn¡¯t see the scanner which is directly connected to my Mac. It only sees the Epson printer/scanner which is connected through wifi. I don¡¯t think the V600 can be connected via network. I have looked through the Epson software but don¡¯t see an option to connect to a scanner that is connected to the Mac via us.

Scanner give away
5
Hello friends, In 2001 I purchased an Epson Perfection 1650 photo scanner. I paid $264.99 for it. Originally it scanned documents and slides and negatives. It still does a great job scanning documents unfortunately the light bulb used for scanning slides and negatives no longer functions and the part is no longer made. I have continued to use the scanner to scan documents. Today my wife and I were at an estate sale and lo and behold sitting on the table for $100 was an Epson Perfection V600 Photo scanner. I bought it on the condition that if I got it home and the slide / negative function didn¡¯t function I could return it. I got it home and voila it works perfectly. I did have to download drivers for it and Epson technical support emailed me the link. I use VueScan to control the scanner - it all works great. The same scanner sells today for $349. I got a deal! So I am offering, free of charge, the Perfection 1650 scanner. If you want it and you live in Louisville and surrounding environs I will arrange to deliver it to you. Otherwise you would have to make arrangements to pick it up. This scanner does a great job scanning docs but no longer is able to scan slide and negatives. Let me know if you want it.

Older Canon MX680 Printer Up For Grabs
Hi Gang, I have an old MX680 Printer/Scanner/Fax combo up for grabs. It is in working order. It was ours originally and when we upgraded we gave it to my Mom. She just upgraded to a new printer with ink tanks instead of cartridges, so we're offering this up if anyone can use it. We also have 7 ink cartridges that go with it. It can print on 4" x 6", 4" x 8", 5"x 7", 8" x 10", Letter, Legal, U.S. #10 Envelopes. Has Auto Duplex Print and Scan and 150 Page Auto Sheet Feeder. It's been so long since we used it here at home that I can't remember all the specifics, but you can find more info, including the manual for it here on the Canon site: https://www.usa.canon.com/support/p/pixma-mx860 It will run on older Mac OS flavors and Windows 10, but is no longer supported by Canon as far as new drivers go. You can download the older drivers from Canon. I can send photos of the actual printer if you like. Feel free to contact me directly if you are interested. Thanks! Beth Phillips

Apple Mail Junk folder
6
Hi all, Has anyone else had Apple's junk filter start behaving strangely? For some reason (for me) confirmation emails from airlines, bank statements, and other places I routinely get and read email have started to be filtered into Junk. If this does happen, are there tips for how to train the filter better? I do take things from Junk that are not junk and move them into my inbox. Is there something better? Bill

Three years ago I purchased an iMac with AppleCare. AppleCare has expired and Apple is now offering to continue AppleCare for $60.00 for one year. Is this something I should or want to do? Harry

to buy or not to buy a modem
12
Hi all, Spectrum (the internet provider where my mom lives) told me today that my modem was no longer supported [1]. It's an Arris SB6141, which is DOCSIS 3.0. They say they will let me have a modem to use for free, but I'm a bit worried that it really a gateway, and I don't want them to have their backdoors in the router. So... I went to look at DOCSIS 3.1 modems, and they are pricier ($150 to $200!) than I expected ($60). Clearly I haven't bought a modem in many many years. So... should I take the free modem (which might be a gateway) or should I buy a modem? Any tips/arguments either way would be appreciated. Bill [1] The account just came out of hibernation and they've jacked up the speeds. I've tried for the better part of 3 hours to get things to work, but the best speed I can get is ... 0.07 Mbps for downloads on those few times I can even get the speedtest to load. Yow.

Passkey
I just ordered an item off the internet, on my wife¡¯s iPad. When I got to payment since there was no ApplePay I choose PayPal. Since I had never used her devise PayPal ask to use PassKey on another device, yes. I picked up the iPhone it did two face scans & PayPal opened on her iPad & completed the purchase. That was so cool! John
