Re: Reassurance on best path

Lee,

I turned on FileVault, I copied the key, I didn¡¯t store in iCloud since I¡¯m going to sell the computer. ?

I was ask to Reboot, now two dialog boxes appear, one with my name and one as Guest.

If I type in my password I get in fine, there is no question for the FileVault key, so I hope I did everything correctly.

If the new owner logs in as a guest will they have the ability to create their own account for the machine? I¡¯m sure they would not want to go through this each time the log in?

Sorry to keep asking questions, this is new ground for me. ?

I¡¯m wanting to be sure I¡¯ve protected my data and also made it so someone else isn¡¯t hampered with my dialogue box showing up each time they log on.

Thanks for holding my hand.

John

Lee, when you say "master password for the computer¡±?do you mean my logon password?

Apple calls it a firmware password. I shouldn¡¯t have listed it because, if FileVault is enabled, it won¡¯t help you to get into the data.

The firmware password is an extra level of protection most people don¡¯t bother with. It¡¯s a password that must be supplied at boot time in order to start up the machine. The purpose is to keep someone from booting with an external drive. I¡¯ve never set one on any of my Macs.

You can read about firmware passwords?.

What is the user password? Is that different from the "master password for the computer¡±?

The user password is the password to your own account. It¡¯s also called the login password. It¡¯s likely not the same as the firmware password.

And when I turn on FireVault do I understand correctly that I will get a ¡°recovery key¡±? I use last pass - would that be a good place to keep the recovery key?

When you turn on FileVault, a random recovery key is created. It¡¯s a 120-bit random string that is displayed. It looks omething like?xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx, where each x is a letter or digit. Apple gives you the option of holding it in ¡°escrow¡± on your iCloud account. This key can be used to decrypt your FileVault data.

If you choose to let Apple Store your recovery key, then anyone who knows your iCloud login information can decrypt your FileVault. I¡¯m not worried about Apple¡¯s security so I choose to let Apple store it for me. (I also keep it in an encrypted note in the Notes app.)

Keeping it in LastPass would work. But, unless you¡¯re using the same LastPass account on more than one machine, you¡¯d better know your LastPass account information for Web access to get the key.

By the way, LastPass has been having huge??lately. I switched over to??because the news about LastPass just kept getting worse. If I didn¡¯t use non-Apple machines, I think I¡¯d just use Apple¡¯s Keychain.
