Okay, I have more information. Jonathan made a startup jump drive with High Sierra for me. I was able to do a 7 pass erase on the MacBook and then I installed the High Sierra - or so I thought. After the installation was complete I got this screen.

I quit the installer and restarted the machine but the message reappeared after the installer quit.?
Any suggestions? Or possibly there is something the matter with the computer???
Probably nothing wrong. This is just Apple being mean. You¡¯re getting this message because the signature certificate has expired. You can install the old operating system by fooling it about the date.
To do this, select the terminal under utilities and reset the date to something back in 2017. I think the following will do the trick:
date 0121123017
This should set the date to January 21 12:30:00 2017.
Make sure WiFi and Ethernet are not connected so the machine can¡¯t grab the real date from somewhere.
