Re: New to being ownwer/moderator
FYI, it's worth noting that a large number of members of these groups do not access them via email.? They visit the group's website, when they get around to it.? Therefore, it might not be a good idea to delete messages before everyone has a chance to read them, and maybe it's best to leave them there forever.? I'm not speaking about this thread; but in general it is probably best to not delete most messages in the groups where you are now an Owner/Moderator.
?
Also, the guidelines for how to run a group are mostly up to the group's Owners (that's you).? It is your choice how to handle situations where someone goes off the rails.? Each group may have their own unique ways of handling it, and some groups never need to deal with it.? Any member can have their posting privileges temporarily revoked, which is an effective way to silence someone who gets abusive.? Also, topics can be locked so nobody can reply to them.
?
There are general guidelines about what is NOT allowed in all Groups hosted at groups.io.? Things like pornography and copyrighted material is generally not allowed.? Consider that your starting point, and then a group owner can go from there and further decide what topics are OK and what is too much off-topic for that group.? Again, that's the owners' decision.
?
Steve Greenfield has his way of running these groups.? When someone makes me a co-moderator, I try to follow the lead of the group's original owner and not change their style very much.? When in doubt, you can ask Steve how he wants it done.
?
By the way, another place where Moderators sometimes visit, is the "Beta" group.? That's where the owner of Groups.io discusses changes to the functions and features of the software behind all these groups.? It is not a good place to learn or discuss how to run a group, the way the "Group Managers Forum" is.

Re: New to being ownwer/moderator
Hang in there as moderator (sorry, don't know ur name). I moderate several platforms and once you get the rhythm it's as easy as the schedule you have for brushing ur teeth. I check my groups and forums as a routine just after (guess what) brushing my teeth ... it's just a normal routine... a few minutes every day. Of course, this is a very active group, so you'll probably shoot up the learning curve quite quickly. Thank you for your service. Bob Betts, N1KPR

I'm new to this (so new it's embarrassing) and there are so many things I need to learn.
Like what's allowed/disallowed, is there a way to politely inform a poster "you've crossed a line, please don't again," and similar topics.
We can delete this thread after it has served it's purpose.

Re: Good Morning from Rural VA

Welcome to the group (or nuthouse). ? You could do much worse then to purchase an assembled loop PCB from Everett. I purchased a pair of his older boards and they've provided 2 or 3 (maybe 4) years of excellent service with zero problems. ? The real trick to mounting any PCB amp outside is to keep it dry. Everett's design runs warm enough so condensation probably wouldn't be a problem, but, to make sure, I used two pieces of Gortex repair tape, one inside, one outside on opposite sides of the same hole. I sealed the case and I/O ports with silicon conformal seal. I used 1/4" copper tubing I filled with dry sane and formed around a 55 gallon container. I'd hoped to rig an electronic steering similar to RDF used on marine ships, with, at best, very marginal results. I suspect his Welbrook Clones might be the ultimate in practical performance. At some point the internal noise of the amplifier/receiver is so far below the ambient RF noise floor that further improvement is gilding the lily. ? I too no longer enjoy the energy or movement capability of a young man, I'll be 73 at the end of the month, and, I'll be having my left knee totally replaced a few days before then. My right went fine but I lost all of June and August to mobility issues, so I'm cramming all my pre-winter preparation/testing in the next two weeks, this includes but isn't limited to testing coax, exterior coaxial cable connectors, ground connections, sealing of the amplifier cases, some weak signal far field signal tests, along with redoing our home from lessons learned in June after the first surgery. ? I could write pages on practical steps to reduce one's homegrown EMI (Electromagnetic Interference, AKA radio noise) but I won't. ? A shocking amount of the EMI that plagues our reception comes from devices within our own homes. ? Do your research, think about what you want to listen to, then make a decision and don't worry too much, it isn't life and death. I'm mainly interested in ELF~LF and totally uninterested in anything above 20MHz. Your interests will be different. The more time you spend thinking and jotting down notes, the better your search will go and the higher your eventual satisfaction. ? If there is a local ham radio club, don't hesitate to reach out to them. while their focus is on 2-way comms, most hams are more then willing to help a SWL. ? That's why I have a ham license with a pre-1974 Novice only callsign even though I hold an extra-class license. I've kept my first callsign because I'm obstinate and sentimental in equal measure. The ham who helped me with my first serious antenna conned me into taking the Novice exam. ? |

That is slightly disturbing, but maybe it's not what you might suspect.? Perhaps he is more a listener on the airwaves, than one who transmits, so didn't need his license.? His amateur license expired over two years ago.? But he was still writing in this group as recently as last month, so he seems to be OK.

Kits Available For Wideband Low Noise RX Systems
Greeting to everyone. I have been a lurker/reader of this forum and finally have a contribution. Check-out ===>? ?? to see some of the 'kits' N6GN has developed that you can order from a Chinese FAB business. Several members of the wsprdaemon and Hamsci groups are using Glenn/N6GN hardware to great success. 73? Dick/w7wkr |

I don't know how I missed that...it may be a result of trying to watch too many discussion groups. ! I had several conversations by email with Andy over the years and found him to be a real gentleman..always very friendly and helpful and I'm sad that we lost him.

Good Morning from Rural VA
Hi All,
Long time reader. I enjoy this group. First post. My health is lacking. I walk with a cane. I will leave it at that. Antennas must must be low to the ground as I cannot climb or put up wire antennas to any sort of height. I am very interested in setting up a broadband loop antenna to listen and log. Perhaps to use it as a second receiver. Steve, AA7U has been helpful to me and I thank him. I decided to post here and learn. I have read extensively in the files area and have looked at lots of pictures and read much about the rf amplifiers. I can make most everything I will need, and am very experienced in building manhatten or SMD (yes I can still do that! :-) with my magnifiers. I have, a scope, sig gen, DSA 815-TG, power supplys, VNWA/3E, and hako soldering equipment including the FR-301 (Handy for fixing radios!) and most all the other equipment as well. Meters, most PEAK tools (LCR DCA55,ESR70) I would like to build my own things. I read this article on top of what was posted here and was impressed with it. I would like to get your feedback on this. I am also interested in what Joe and Steve have done with amplifiers. I would prefer not to have to order from europe and make my own. /g/loopantennas/files/APracticalApproachToBuildingABroadbandActiveLoop.pdf Thanks for this group! 73 Guy N1GMM -- 73/ Guy, N1GMM Web Presence: Withywindle ( ) tom-bombadillo ( ) |

Fred, I'm not re-inventing the wheel, just trying to ascertain if I have the correct tyres.? Sometimes it's challenging and interesting as a hobbyist to try to DIY a project rather than simply buy the finished article.

Best wishes

Chris, why do you want to re-invent the wheel?
From Everett, N4cy you can get naked or assembled boards. Steve AA7U has posted the appropriate circuit diagram and bom. Suitable transistors had been discussed in depth in recent threads.

Re: Wellbrook traced-out loop amp schematics uploaded to Photos
Hi again
?
I'm still confused about the VR1 trimpot and resistors R1 & R2 in parallel because some circuits include the trimpot and some do not.? Therefore if VR1 is omitted the source to GND resistance is 51ohms, however with the addition of the trimpot this resistance would fall to 25ohms so surely only one of these can be the optimal value.
?
Thanks

Re: Wellbrook traced-out loop amp schematics uploaded to Photos
Hello from France Thanks to Steve and all the OMs of this Groups for this topic/wellbrook_traced_out_loop_amp thread, which is very interesting. As always with Mouser and DigiKey, the transistors mentioned have several references Due to these conditions, what are the optimal references to carry out the realization of this preamplifier? Besides that: (without parallel resistors), if the wiper arm of the pot goes open-circuit the circuit doesn't just go out of spec....it DIES.? This is probably not as uncommon a failure as you'd imagine for a circuit out in the elements.
Also note that. either with or without parallel resistors, full CW or CCW on the pot will route ALL current through one side or the other...no matter what the value of the pot is.? A good production design would add a resistor between the wiper of the pot and ground to modulate its effect.
