Besides that: (without parallel resistors), if the wiper arm of the pot goes open-circuit the circuit doesn't just go out of spec....it DIES.? This is probably not as uncommon a failure as you'd imagine for a circuit out in the elements.
Also note that. either with or without parallel resistors, full CW or CCW on the pot will route ALL current through one side or the other...no matter what the value of the pot is.? A good production design would add a resistor between the wiper of the pot and ground to modulate its effect.
