Steven Greenfield AE7HD <alienrelics@...> added the album Capacitance meter 555 timer 0.1pF resolution: Originally, I used a 50uA panel meter from Radio Shack for the display. Later, when DMMs became reasonably priced, I started building them without a display, calibrated for a 10M DMM. I still have one of my ugly prototypes from then, not the first one, but close to it. It is in an ugly orange plastic box that I think had perfume in it. Good to 0.1pF on the 200.0mV scale and up to 20uF if you let the meter auto up to 2V on the highest scale.
I recently connected it to my new DMM that has a 600.00mV scale, and found it was stable enough at least in the short term to reliably detect 10fF (femtofarad) or 0.01pF changes with only a digit of wobble.
