Your guess is plausible. Sounds weird, but i have found different radios perform differently and may respond better when placed near tuned loops. The higher a radio performs on its own, the less it benefits from a tuned loop. My favorite for placing near a tuned loop is the Tecsun PL 230. I've used my PL-310, a favorite among ultralighters, and my CR-1100, an early DSP portable but they didn't perform as well. What actually worked well with them was to replace the internal ferrite loopstick with a bigger outboard one with similar inductance. No added tuner needed! BTW, the Palomar amps are long since out of production. Find em on eBay once in a while.?
