I'll take a stab at question #1.
According to the specs the LDG 100 Pro II:
??? Tunes 6 to 1000 ohm loads (16 to 150 on 6M)
Most autotuners use a? switched-L configuration. A rational for their use was included in the Ten-Tec 253 tuner I used to own. It ranges from a low parts count to only a single solution as benefits. The fo;;owing is extracted from Sec 4-2 of the Model 253 manual.
