Harpoon V
Bonjour ¨¤ tous,

Harpoon V
Gents,
Harpoon V will be published in May. I have the luck to read drafts of the new edition, and I can say that it¡¯s very good. Since I will run the game with the new rules, I have to explain the most important changes (from the point of view of our game).
Ship and aircraft movement There is a new table for the dischargement of diesel submarines batteries. I will communicate it to you as soon as I find time to do it. The rules for aircraft endurance is much more simple. I will adjust the aircraft interfaces accordingly.
Radar detection Radar detection of air targets depends of radar of course but also of the combat system of the ship. The older the combat system, the more inertia there is in detecting, tracking and classifying the contact. Moreover, there is a new class of air search radars called LAS (low altitude air search) who can pick up targets at Vlow but won¡¯t catch anything at high altitude. Radar detection rules now work like those of CaS. In short, the range of detection is reduced by clutter (which depends on rain, ground background, etc.). The more modern the radars are, the more they can reduce the clutter (and hence keep good detection range). Another thing worth mentionning is more elaborated rules for ducting. However, we won¡¯t use them as wethaer condition in the scenario we are playing do not allow ducting. ESM becomes ES. Detection range changes a bit, but the most important thing is that ES detection no longer gives an accurate bearing. Most ES sets lack bearing accuracy aand targeting with ES detection only becomes difficult.
Sonar Detection The rules for sonar detection have been rebuilt and are IMHO very good. They no longer allow to detect a loud target at high speed at hundreds of nautics (the maximum modifier is x 9). The rules for thermocline are better than H4 ones. The layer can be at shallow, moderate or deep depth and its effects variy with depths and radar frequencies. There is also a new detection mode called Bottom Bouncing. Bottome bouncing requires a flat and rocky sea bed. I have to confess that I have no idea of the sea bed in the Gulf of Syrt. If one of you have information about that, please tell me. There are also some welcome precisions about MAD detection
Fire control There are new rules for fire control. They simulate the fog of war (the fact that in a table top games players know more than they should about the position of the enemy) as well as the difficulty in setting up a fire solution for antiship missiles and torpedoes. Due to the nature of PBEM games (in which you do not know where is the enemy until you detect him), I won¡¯t use this rules as they are, but only to guess the time needed to elaborate a fire solution. Another great change is the abstraction of SAM shots. Instead of moving aircraft and SAM ET after ET, the rules allow a SAM to fire x times before the missiles reaches its target. I don¡¯t know yet if I will use it for our PBEM game, but you have to know that I will use the rules that introduce inertia between initial detection and actual shooting of SAM.
Combat There are small changes in air-to-air combat. Planes dogfighting have higher chances to get a shot at an opponent, but AAM (and SAM) have lower chances to hit. The AA guns rules have changed and are now close to CaS. I do not have the new AAM, SAM and gun values so I don¡¯t know if I will be able to use the new stats. I will keep you informed. Air attacks against
ships have also new rules, once again, very close to CaS. IMHO they
work better than the previous one. For some reason I can¡¯t explain,
retarded bombs have no longer higher chances to hit than low drag
ones. Best regards to all, Francis

Re: Harpoon V
Hi, Thanks Francis for the synthesis. I would like to say that I'm impatient to test the new rules and start a game. I'm finalizing my Harpoon tracker (and I'm using it for a game of The Hunters). My idea is to use google earth to track the movement and contact (and provide the player with just their vision of the environment). Please find an exemple below. I will generating Google sheet file too, for contact tracking additional info, movement reports etc... by player. And I'm generating flat map too (Mercator projection only for now.) As soon as the rules are published, I will read them, try one sole and if some of you are tempted start a game. Do you know if the rules will include a Quick start? Some picture and the associated KML (to open in google earth). Regards, Benoit

Jouer la guerre
Bonjour ¨¤ tous,

Harpoon V
Bonjour ¨¤ tous,
Francis |

Gents,
I am proud to welcome on this board Peter Grining, a veteran Harpoon player, and a member of the Admiralty Trilogy staff. He has co-authored Harpoon V supplements with Larry Bond and Chris Carlson. He helped me elaborating data annexes for the Harpoon games I ran this last years. Thanks, and welome aboard, Peter. Francis |
