Future Long Lance game 8
Gents, for the moment, nine players told me they want to participate to the future Long Lance game : Ludovic Servera Pascal Colombier Dominique Guillemin Dave Gaskell Laurent Weiss Aymeric Gribaut Markus Baur Marino Van Welden Brandon Musler It will be a day surface action in European waters. I haven't chosen the scenario yet as I suspect that some players just forgot to answer my call. If you are interested, please tell me, so I can choose the scenario accordingly. Best regards to all, Francis

Savo, Game Turn 13
Gents, I have sent the reports for the surviving ships. The surviving players must now send me their orders for GT14 before Friday (4 April). Please be aware that visibility is still increasing (14000 yards this turn, 15000 yds next one). Paradoxaly, it does turn in better sighting conditions for some ships as fires and gunflashes are less visible in daylight than during night. Good luck to all, Francis

Future games 9
Gents, here is the list of the players who want to participate to the next Long Lance games: Ludovic Servera Pascal Colombier Dominique Guillemin Dave Gaskell Laurent Weiss Aymeric Gribaut Markus Baur Marino Van Welden Brandon Musler Arnaud Massat Hervé Perrot Stefen Sarullo Juhan Arnaud Pierre-Pierre Laurent Leclerc My intention is to organize two games rather than one, because it seems that it's easier to manage (it splits the workload). The first scenario is a variation on the Hunt for the Graf Spee, involving the german corsaire and French cruisers of Force M. I need three players for this one. The second scenario is a variation on the convoy PQ17. I involves twleve players. In the PQ17 scenario, players will command either a heavy ship (cruiser or battleship) or a destroyer division. Players commanding a cruiser or battleship division will command the player(s) in charge of the other ships in the division. One of the players will be the admiral commanding the Task Force. Please tell me: - Which scenario and nationality you would like to join. - What kind of warship (destroyer division or heavier units) you would like to command. - If you want to lead a team or a heavy ships division. I will arrange the teams as best as I can. Francis

Interface for Long Lance 8
Gents, I am working on the interface that will be used during the next Long lance game. During several years, the interface we used had the special feature of calculating the coordinates of units from their initial location, heading and speed. Its advantage was to allow the player to use the coordinates to plan moves in Google Earth. The main problem, is that it sometimes broke down, when players accidently erased formulas. For the current game (Savo 2), I developped a completely new interface. It is more simple as it contains very few formulas. It gives no coordinates, but cannot break down. Depending on your point of view, it may look more or less user friendly than the previous interface. I now need your feedback to make my own mind. Dominique has already said that he dislikes the new interface and likes better the previous one, but I need more than one point of view. Please tell me which model of interface you prefer and why. I attach two projects of interface so you can make your mind. Thanks for your feedback, Francis

Serious technical issue with Savo 6
Gents, the tool that I use to run the game has a serious technical issue: it cannot be saved anymore. Erreur lors de l'enregistrement du document: Erreur générale. Erreur d'entrée/sortie générale. Does anyone know about a solution? Thanks for any help, Francis PS: For the next game, I definitively need to make backups

Possible rules modification for the next game 15
Gents, I have started working on a slightly modified interface and rules for the next Long Lance game. My priority is to simplify the rules as much as possible in order to ease the work of new players. I have a few ideas, but don't hesitate to tell me your feelings. - Order phase / commandment rules : I suggest to abandon the Flag Command Rating, because the problem is not that players send too many messages, but rather the contrary. Each ship can send one message by flag, one by blinker, one by TBS (if fitted) and one by VHF. Messages by flag use Seekrieg V codes, while others are in plain text (length of the messages may be limited to 30 words). If more than one TBS message is send on a channel, interference is possible. VHF messages take two turns to get through the codage / decodage process. I hope that the communications rules will be clear and simple, so everyone will understand and respect them. - Torpedoes : using torpedoes seems difficult for many players. I intend to help them by simplifying the process : * I will probably delete the need to prepare torpedoes the turn before the launch. It's too difficult for many players, and wastes many opportunities. We will assume that the torpodo officier always have the torpedoes ready. Torpedoes will enter the water immediatly and will move during the movement phase of the turn of launch. * Some players have issues computing the bearing of the torpedoes. I wonder if the referee (me) should calculate it for them. Let's assume that the ship captain just picks up the target, and let the torpedo officer make the computation. - Fires : the actual Long Lance rules (inspired by Command at Sea) reduce the danger of fires compared to Seekrieg V. It is a designed choice I made because in SK5, fires kill ships too fast in my taste (USS Franklin would not have survived with SK5 rules). In Long Lance rules, the fires create damage (and possibly DE if severity >50) only when they start, and if the total of fires is superior of 10% of the initial DP of the ship, it is a conflagration (there are chances of systems damaged by fire or evacuated due to flames, heat or smoke). The damage cpntrol roll to fight off the fires is not made at the end of every turn (it request too much hand work for the referee), but only on the third turn after a fire has begun. This last rule just don't work because it is too cumbersome, and I don't apply them. On the next game, there will be no DC roll to control the fires during a surface engagement. What do you think about this proposed changes ? Do you see other stuff that need to be changed ? All the best, Francis

Harpoon games
Gents, when issueing orders for Harpoon games, please do not forget to rename the files. For example, if you are in command of the carrier Foch during the Tactical Turn 0630-0633, the file should be named "Foch 0630-0633". It is a small, simple thing for you, but it helps me managing the dozen of files I received since the start of the game. And renaming myself all the documents is both boring and time consuming. Thanks for taking care of that. Francis PS : for Seekrieg / Long Lance games, do not rename the documents !

future Seekrieg / Long Lance game 10
Gents, the current game (the Battle of Savo) is now well advanced and I start thinking on the next game. I don't mean that the game is about to end, but that depending on players decisions, and other things, the game can continue for months or end abruptly. Accordingly, I start working on the next game. Please tell me if you intend to participate on the future game. Brandon, I remember that talked about one of your friends (Mel Spence if my memory is correct). You can offer him to join. Please give me your feedback about the rules and PBEM tools. I will try to improve things if I can. Thanks, Francis

Precisions 2
Gents, my apologies, I forgot to inform you about the changes in the kmz file. You have probably noticed that some of the ships in the map are now colored. I assume you know that the level of fires aboard a ship is shown in the atribute data of the ship (just clic on it and a window with the data appears). To make things simple, the color of the ship (and of its track) now also shows the level of fire : - no fire : blue ship, white track - small fire (<50) : yellow - large fire (50-100) : orange - severe fir (>100) : red I hope it will help you visualize the situation. Best regards to all, Francis
