Freshwater leaking into port bilge #380s2

Hi all,

ive got a freshwater leak into the stbd bilge it comes from the freshwater system (not rain!!). The leak fills the keel bilge void in approx 3 days and is getting worse.?

I have looked everywhere where I can see but there do seem to be a number of areas that I can’t quite see. There also seems to be freshwater under the fuel tank and I’m mystified how water gets there !!!!

Any top tip, ideas, advice .... greatly received.?

Thank you?for your help.?

Check the shower in rear. Mine leaked into this area from engine compartment. The fitting was loose at the mixer valve. If it’s this you’ll see water in engine bilge. Also check freezer drain?

Do you have AC? Condensation from the AC system finds its way into the keel bilges. Might want to check the auto bilge pump is working too.

It can be frustrating, but try the shower float switch. You can try putting food die in the tank to help see where it’s coming from.

Where is you hot water tank. On mine its located under the port side aft bunk. if it leaks it drains into the bilge?

Marc,

On a 380, a freshwater leak in the port hull is most likely to be one of two things.?

1) The deck shower fitting is leaking (start by looking on the port engine room and following the pipework forward)
2) The water heater pipework or valve has degraded/corroded. This is under the port rear berth. If there is a leak, the water tends to pond around the batteries.?

A leak from the pipework under the sink in the port heads is also possible - but less likely.?

If you hear the pump under the galley sink cycling from time to time when you are NOT using water, then it is likely to be 1), otherwise 2).?

Hope that helps.?

Cheers

Craig

On my 380-S2 owners version, there are no factory freshwater lines near the starboard fuel tank.? A leak in the lines that run from under the kitchen sink to the starboard head could definitely fill the starboard bilge but that should drain into the bilge under the cabinet between the escape window and the stairway forward of the fuel tank.? A failure in the sink drain near the thru-hull in that area could also fill the bilge.

I did have a leak into the bilge under the starboard bunk but that turned out to be rainwater from the large hull window.? The seal failed at the top because it wasn't properly sealed at the factory.

Glen,

As a prior owner of a 2001 380 owners version, I had the same problem. I eventually found a leak had developed in the plastic water lines running from the pump under the galley sink to the sink and shower in the master head. These lines ran to starboard under the galley range and cabinet. They then made a 90 degree turn forward running behind the pantry cabinet and behind the top of the steps becoming accessible under head sink.?

My leak developed in the area of the aforementioned 90 degree bend, which may be slightly visible inside the owners cabinet forward of the escape hatch/window (at the very top). ?The water would run down the inner hull in a location I could not see or access, then travel aft to under the fuel tank and eventually overflow into the bilge.?

I replaced both water lines (not fun) and the problem was corrected.?

Hope this helps!

Steve

Steve,

I was replying to Marc to try to help him find his leaks in that area but have never personally had that problem.? I described the same water lines you did and, although I didn't specifically mention the 90 degree bends, that's exactly where I was thinking that a leak could develop.? Amazing!

Having spent many days working in that area installing components of a modular water maker, I can easily visualize it.

Troubleshooting Tip

first, pay attention to your fresh water pump. if it cycles on it own every once in a while, meaning no one has open a faucet, it should not, never. If it does, you have a leak on the pressurized side of the water system. If it never cycle on it’s own, then you can focus on drains, airco, fridge, tanks, etc. One thing to keep in mind is from fresh water tank to pressure pump is not pressurized and could be leaking without pump cycling. Hot water tank is pressurized and transom shower also.?

if it’s not on the pressurized side of the system; A leak as big as you describe will empty your tank noticibly. Stop using starboard showers and sinks for a few days. If you still get water in the bilge on that side, it’s not a drain issue, unless you have fresh water heads then it could come from head water intake.

Its not a fix, but a great way to start troubleshooting. Hope this helps.?

I had a problem with the plastic tees that connected the water lines to the hot water heater. One developed a small crack which slowly leaked water in the port bilge on my 2001 lagoon 380. I replaced with brass tees (3/8) and used a heat gun to insert into the metric water hoses.

Lot easier that replacing the entire water line.

stainless pex crimp rings and crimp tools are pretty inexpensive - $20 for the tool - and IMO better than the slip-in style… but you do need room to get the tool onto the connection…

We had a leak in the hand held hose for the sugar scoop shower that drained the tank and filled the bilge.
