If this is a project you want to be once-and-done with, try looking for aircraft grade springs instead of your standard hardware junk ;-)

Related: we had an employee crash his plane - while taxiing - because someone had replaced a rudder return spring with a hardware store variety. Spring failed, pedal would not lift, and he just kept turning right into a closed hanger. Propellor chewed thru doors and he stopped moving when the wings hit the doors¡ which was REALLY fortunate as the hangar held a collection of restored Corvettes

so that¡¯s when I learned that true ¡°aircraft grade¡± truly means a MUCH higher quality.

One of my springs died last year and I was able to figure out that the latches are made by SouthCo and tracked down the latch mechanism. I purchased from a crazy website no one has ever heard of but it came and fit perfectly...only $85 for the latch vs. the $200+ for the entire assembly. Still way too much for a spring, but I couldn't figure out how to open the latch assembly to get the spring out to fix it. I imagine if you could, you could get a replacement spring at any old-timey hardware store. Maybe a?good locksmith shop could just replace the springs...
