Mim's portrait 5
Since we're going down memory lane I thought I'd post 2 photos and a pdf explaining the painting. I have no reason to doubt Lonie's detailed answer to my original questions on the provenance of the portrait in my living room, I'd like to share to this group and see if there's any more to the story you may remember. Thanks and happy new year. Steve Ruggieri414-630-2558

World Cup fans? 11
Some of you may not know that ¡°back in the day¡± (my KHS time) there was no football in Chester County. Boys (only, pre Title 9) played soccer in the fall. I mostly sat the bench. Regardless, I credit that experience for my lifelong love of the sport and especially the quadrennial tournament showcasing the best teams on the planet. I¡¯m curious if any other fans on this email list want to chat about this shared love. Text me! Steve Ruggieri 414-630-2558

the whistle 2
Objective correlative The whistle I have always taught my students not to ¡°force a confession out of the poem.¡± But that¡¯s what I do. I can¡¯t help myself. When a writer uses a specific object (the afghan) several times, she wants to convey a secret message to the few who will get it. I did not get the ¡°whistle¡± but I know it is there. So I cheat. I research. Sure enough! There is a certain moral in the story it is: hat one should not sacrifice or spend too much of their time or money on things that are not worth it. "if you need me just blow the whistle and i'll come to you". The Whistle, a Letter by Benjamin Franklin. ... An illustration for the story The Whistle by the author Benjamin Franklin. Francesco and afghan 5
Sally, so glad you read the book. I couldn¡¯t finish the novel until I saw the ending. So in romance novel speak, it¡¯s an HFN (Happy For Now) story. I have several of those afghans Mom made. My favorite is on my bed all winter. Thanks for reading and commenting. Aunt Ronnie¡¯s faith carried her through that loss. I wish I had it. Love, Elaine

Afghan and Francesca (corrected)
My proustian madeleine... The afghan brought memories rushing. One of my fondest remembrances of things past was of a bridal shower Joy hosted for Laura. Rosalie presented Laura with a hand- knit afghan that Angie had so proudly made for her. Intertextuality ¡°We are sensible people.¡± The Francesca who gave way to her passion according to the Poet suffers infernale bufera. Your Francesca for now is safe. Will she make a trip to Rome? Death of a child changes life forever. Joey¡¯s death left a wordless void. To an Athlete Dying Young BY A. E. HOUSMAN The time you won your town the race We chaired you through the market-place; Man and boy stood cheering by, And home we brought you shoulder-high. Today, the road all runners come, Shoulder-high we bring you home, And set you at your threshold down, Townsman of a stiller town. Smart lad, to slip betimes away From fields where glory does not stay, And early though the laurel grows It withers quicker than the rose. Eyes the shady night has shut Cannot see the record cut, And silence sounds no worse than cheers After earth has stopped the ears. Now you will not swell the rout Of lads that wore their honours out, Runners whom renown outran And the name died before the man. So set, before its echoes fade, The fleet foot on the sill of shade, And hold to the low lintel up The still-defended challenge-cup. And round that early-laurelled head Will flock to gaze the strengthless dead, And find unwithered on its curls The garland briefer than a girl¡¯s.

BRAVO ELAINE! 4
Just to let you know that I've read your book and enjoyed it very much. A couple of the "characters" were so recognizable that I laughed out loud a couple of times. And, of course, your description of Penn Square was spot on. Congratulations and I look forward to the sequel when Francie makes that trip to Rome! Linda

Two Items of Interest 21
1. My novel, Retreat at St. Jerome¡¯s, is now available on Amazon.com. Started it in 2004 with many starts and stops. Here¡¯s the link: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=retreat+at+st.+Jerome%27s&i=stripbooks&ref=nb_sb_noss 2. The new Kennett Heritage Center, 102 N. Union Street, is celebrating its opening on Thursday, July 22 with an ice cream social. The founder, Lynn Sinclair, wrote to tell me my father, Archie Ruggieri, and the Mushroom Transportation Company which he founded, will be part of the exhibit. Maybe some of you can attend then or later and write to us about your visit. Hope you¡¯re having a wonderful summer. Elaine
