Re: Memories guess the artist
Amy, did you paint this?! It is amazing! And yes the house?has less windows now. It looked better back then I'm sure! On Wed, Oct 27, 2021 at 10:11 AM Amy <anspappas@...> wrote:

Re: Memories guess the artist
开云体育That beautiful porch used to run the length of the front of the house, put Archie closed the right side in to make a workshop for his father, a cobbler whose customers came and went from a door around the side. The wall has always been there and is there today. But now the entire porch is boxed in and the whole house is cut up into apartments. I based this scene on old photographs of 405 from about 1940. Angie looks out the window. Rosalie sits on the wall and watches Elaine roller-skate with Prince. Dino sits on porch. The large trees in front were King Crimson maples.

Cool painting. Don’t remember the wall at the sidewalk or the fancy details on the porch.?

Re: the whistle
开云体育?Sally, Remember “Key Largo” when Lauren Bacall tells Humphrey Bogart how to whistle: ?"You know how to whistle, don't you??You just put your lips together and blow.” ?I’ll have to check some files to why I used the whistle. I think it was while checking on Nigerian languages. Spellings were never the same. Clement Ogbomo, a Nigerian engineer and husband of a caretaker nearby, read my book for accuracy. The errors he found were more in English punctuation, so cheers for Nigerian educators who teach strict grammar.

the whistle
开云体育Objective correlativeThe whistle I have always taught my students not to “force a confession out of the poem.” But that’s what I do. ?I can’t help myself. ?When a writer uses a specific object (the afghan) several times, she wants to convey a secret message to the few who will get it. I did not get the “whistle” but I know it is there. So I cheat. ?I research. Sure enough! There is a certain moral in the story it is:?hat one should not sacrifice or spend too much of their time or money on things that are not worth it. "if you need me just blow the whistle and i'll come to you". The Whistle, a Letter by Benjamin Franklin. ... An illustration for the story? The Whistle?by the author Benjamin Franklin. 开云体育Okay, guys, I’m sort of bringing up the rear on this book, but I’m almost finished. ?I am reading it slowly both because of necessity and preference. ?I’ve had lots of company and other stuff going on. But also, if I really like a book, I like to live with it. ?One way is to read it really fast and then go back and read it again. ?The other is to read it slowly and think about it as I go along—which is what I am doing with Retreat at St Jerome. ?What I would love to do is form a little group of us who want to discuss the book. ?We can email our thoughts and comments to others within the group—talk back and forth. ?I’d be happy to start things off. We may even get the author to join in!! ? If interested, send me a personal email <dhmehl@...>??Dorothy

I couldn’t finish the novel until I saw the ending. So in romance novel speak, it’s an HFN (Happy For Now) story.
I have several of those afghans Mom made. My favorite is on my bed all winter.
Thanks for reading and commenting. Aunt Ronnie’s faith carried her through that loss. I wish I had it.

Re: BRAVO ELAINE!
Hi Elaine,
I saw your post last week on the lafamiglia site and immediately ordered your book from Amazon.? So glad I did--not just for the book itself but the opportunity now of connecting with each other.? When else would we have done that?,?
I'm sure Rita would like a copy.? Her address is Rita Leistritz, 138? 49th Street East, West Fargo, ND? 58078.
Thankfully my family is well and thriving.? Daughter Sue and husband, Joe, have 3 kids.? Oldest, Katie. is off to Washington & Jefferson College to study biology.? (One of Katie's closest friends is going to Bucknell!)? Next daughter Angela will be a sophomore and youngest, Michael will be going into 7th grade.? Son Richard and wife Lindsy have 2 kids.? Lucas will be in 5th grade, Aubrey will be in 3rd.? We are fortunate that both families live within 15 minutes of us so we are pretty much up their asses all the time.? I make no apologies for that, by the way!
After we sold the catering business, Bill and I moved to West Grove to a 55 and older community.? All single homes and general maintenance like grass cutting and snow removal are done for us.? Nice.? Sue's kids go to Avon Grove where the education is top notch.? Much improved, I think, since our school days in Kennett.? Sue and Lindsy both teach in the Avon Grove School District.? Richard's kids go the Oxford School District.? I'll not comment on that yet.
I'm sure you miss Lonie.? She certainly kept things happening with the Ruggieri crowd.? Just sad when you think that we are the oldest generation in our family.? That's true with me and Mom's side of the family.? With the exception of one aunt who was married to my Uncle Charlie, I am in the oldest generation in the Pesce/Ferraro group.
When Bill and I sold the catering business, we moved to West Grove-a 55 and older community where they cut your grass and shovel snow!? Nice.? We are both in relatively good health--normal aging aches and pains.
Best of luck with book sales.? Stay in touch!
Linda

You are the first person outside of pre-readers, etc. to have read the book through to the end—and liked the humor. I’m so happy to hear your comments. How did you get the word? I asked Sally for your email. If you think Rita would like a copy, I would send her one gratis. It’s a Ruggieri legacy from me - sounds presumptuous, but I feel even if they don’t like the book, the Ruggieri name is on it.
It is fiction, but I guess I didn’t disguise Kennett very well. I still brag about growing up there, the Kennett Consolidated School and the education I got there, etc. And, the people. Amy and I visited about three years ago, and she couldn’t get over how nice everyone was - even the young priest. No scary Father Craine.
How’s your family? Everyone healthy and happy?
At this very second, all’s well with my daughters and their families. We need Lonie to have another reunion (whom I miss a lot), but I hope I get to see you on one my infrequent trips to Kennett.
Thrilled you wrote. Love, Elaine
